Hi all! Just wanted to let you know about an event that Ragan and I are participating in this July in London. Trailwalker is a team event, where the team of 4 has to stay together the entire distance (ala Eco Challenge). It is a 100K "cross-country" style (some trail, some dirt road). We are competing with 2 other Montrail runners, Francesca Conte and Russ Gill. Check out the race at www.oxfam.org.uk/trailwalkerThe race is to raise money for Oxfam, an organization that works to overcome poverty and supports numerous projects in the world's poorest countries. Check them out at www.oxfam.orgAs a team we must raise 1500pounds as part of our entry. Here is a link to our team fundraising page. We just set it up yesterday, so we are still working on getting a clearer photo and getting a photo of our teammates Frannie&Russ. www.bmycharity.com/V2/teammontrailAny support is appreciated, thanks, Janice

not knowing exactly where you are staying, i can give a few suggestions, but they may be miles away. just know that there is very little in the way of dirt trails in buckhead. piedmont park is nice, although it is more mid-town. there is a 1-2 mile loop around atlanta memorial which is just across northside drive from the edge of bobby jones golf course (or at least there used to be a path when i ran there 10 years ago). this is located sort of south of buckhead. there are some nice trails at oglethorpe univ which is on peachtree street several miles north of phipps plaza. and the neighborhood behind oglethorpe - silver lake - has trails around the lake. there is also a 3+ mile paved path around chastain park, which is not too far from where roswell rd and piedmont intersect. which reminds me, that my old office complex - Piedmont Center (on Piedmont, just northwest of peachtree and buckhead loop) - had a 1+ mile trail in the back of the complex. good luck!

Sounds like a beautiful plan. Should work well - keep an eye out for injuries along the way. Aches and pains at our advanced age can lead to actual injuries. ;D
We sure hope Silver Comet will become an annual event. So long as we get a good turnout and there are no major complaints or issues, then yes we will continue to have it. thx, Janice

Hope it was a good one! Only one more year until the decade party. I hear next year that Rich is making the master's group 40 and over again. That'll put me and Ragan in your age group! J

Per the last 20K of a 100K......
It can be tough. It can be different every time, but that last 20K sure can seem long. My suggestions - keep the pace, it's very mental at this point and you can fight off a slow down - keep your head straight, be sure and take some calories frequently so you can keep concentrating and performing well.
good luck, Jslug

That is really cool that Bill helped get you back into running and into running ultras, no less
CO is a cool place so I hope you get to go out there sometime. I'd love to go out and do a 3 day run from town to town out there.
We look forward to meeting you in person at SCUR. now is time for rest?

Get out of town! Of course we know Bill. Ya know he holds a FatAss of his own now out in Fort Collins.
Sure thing on the training logs. For the most part I was running about 300 miles every month (ie very consistent) and doing lots of speed work. We were doing this relay thing that summer so I was doing miler training at the same time. I think I got down to the low 5:30s that year. Strange mix but it worked at the time.
look forward to meeting you, jslug

very cool double! you're training would say that you are due for a good race
i'm not sure i'm as good as a Park B., but i've run afew fast races. I always figured that even my mother would be bored by my training stats. if you ever want a peek, I have years of training logs in excel format, with graphs. seriously. i'm a geek and love numbers.
who are u double!? jslug

Just remember Horton races are long and you are OK
PL is not much different than MMTR. It has lots of runnable road sections and some single track. There are also a few long climbs, but plenty of decents. Great organization. A typical Horton event.

hey LD Spud!
That's awesome that you'll be here this week!
We look forward to meeting you at the FA. I'm not sure where that hotel is, but give me a call when you get in and I can give you easy directions to the run.
You might want to carry a bottle as it is supposed to be warm. There is one aid station per loop (7.75 miles). There is one water fountain, but it is sometimes broken.
This is trail, although not very rough. There is one stream crossing, but you should be able to cross with dry feet.
cya soon, Janice

i was obvioulsy on vacation tooooo long, having missed until now all the remarks
thanks for the "support", i think....
being 40 is a little weird, having run for so very long, and for so long thinking of "masters" as being "old", but I do prefer it to the alternative (ie dirt nap)
no ear hair yet, i'm sure it's soon to come, i won't mention the hot flashes and all that, but it is good to be around...all you guys! J "Griz"

It certainly sounds familiar. We probably came up with it first and it was stolen.
GUTS members are the type to be "that someone"
Don't ask "why", ask "why not" (listen for it soon on the radio) Griz
