Lost at SCUR? That's kind of scary.
I really like the AT guides they sell at REI. There is one for each state it crosses through, although a few are combined. The guides have detail books on the trail and maps. I think you can also order them on-line. They come in handy seal-able plastic bags.
The AT is blazed well in most sections, you just gotta look up, which can be hard sometimes. Janice

One of the more gentle sections is Hogpen to Unicoi. But even that has some steep hills and a rocky section near Unicoi. But a lot of it is on an old logging road so it's semi-easy.
I guess the section from Woody's south to Springer is not too bad either. Only 1 or 2 mountains to climb. You could always come back via the dirt roads. Janice

I too am a former miler and had some success (5:02 in HS). I agree with Lone Wolf, in that a good race plan is to go out comfortable but hard the first 2 laps, the 3rd laps is the most difficult (always my worst) and requires a lot of GUTS and concentration to maintain pace, with the last lap being a little easier to push through, since you are almost done. She could do some training where she simulates the pace changes, such as breaking 800s up into "quarters" and applying the above race philosophy. Also a little distance on the weekend might help. Not an ultra or anything crazy like that! Janice

if you have run almost that far in training, then i am sure with all our encouragement, you will make the 50K that day
biggest difference between the road and the FA, may be the hills?? There are 2 steep climbs. For the most part the trail is very easy, although the section at the top of Pigeon Hill is rocky.
Why not join us for the training run on Dec 17? We will be running the FA loop. janice

I did B2B in training for 100 milers. Regardless of my daily mileage, there was just no possibly way that I was every going to do a 60+ mile training run (which I did feel was needed). Training for a 50 mile is comparatively easy in that you can do a 30+ mile training run every few weekends and not wear your self out. To train for 100s I figured I could run 5-6 hours on Saturday and then come back and 3-4 hours on Sunday. The sum total would be the equivalent of maybe 60 miles. And I could still do track work on Wed night! ;D
A lot of the GUTS group used this method to train for the 2003 Vermont and everyone ran really well.

More updates from Allison... This may be another one for the forum because based on my inbox, many inquiring, worried minds want to know how Tony's doing. Well, yesterday I got pretty worried about him because he decided he wanted to go with me to get coffee then go to church. I told him it was a bad idea because he could barely stay upright for 10 minutes without getting exhausted, but he was insistent. He kept dozing off while getting dressed and when he was awake, he was saying odd things indicating that he did not know what day or time it was. He told me that his brother had been there that morning (he was there the previous afternoon) and asked me where his sister was (she had left about 15 hours before). We left the house and made it about 2 miles before Tony was so nauseated he had me pull over so he could throw up. He asked to be taken home. I paged the on-call doctor from the family practice we see, and she said I should take him back to the ER. Because he was conscious and not brought in by ambulance, he was relatively low priority at Kennestone. We waited an hour to get a room, then 3 hours to see a doctor. A CT Scan was ordered and anti-nausea medicine was prescribed, but after 6 hours, we were told that he was simply dealing with a bad concussion (not to mention the heavy medication, which probably didn't help with his level of awareness). This morning, he visited his primary care doc, and she gave him more pain medication and a referral to a physical therapist who he should see later this week. He felt a little better after that, so we stopped by Pct 1 to pick up the accident report. The car was a '95 Toyota Tercel (Tony made me swear that I would say it was a Rav 4), and I actually do need someone's help with tracking down the car at the impound lot so pics can be taken ASAP. We'll need them for legal reasons and I just don't have the time. We know where it is, but I'm looking for a good photographer/wanna-be P.I. Overall, Tony's doing ok. He's still in pain and he experiences dizziness and nausea when he gets up. He has pretty low energy and he's sleeping a lot. All things considered, he's amazingly well. Thanks again for all your concern! He hopes to see you all out on the trails soon, but doctor's orders are that he CANNOT run Oak Mtn. (oh well...) Allison

here is an update from Tony's wife Allison (mega GUTS volunteer)
Hey all (please forward on to other GUTS folks or post on the forum) I just want to fill you in on what happened and what's going on now: For those who haven't heard (if such people exist?), on Thursday at 5:30 pm as Tony was headed toward his car after a run at Kennesaw Mtn., he was hit by a car while crossing in the crosswalk on Stilesboro Rd. in front of the Visitor's Center. From what we can piece together from witnesses, it appears that Tony was thrown onto the car's windshield, then roof, then to the grass on the side of the road. The windshield was smashed and where the roof met the windshield, Tony's body managed to create a v-shaped depression about 4-inches deep. The second the car hit him, many good samaritans came to his aid. The park ranger, Officer Lloyd Morris, called for help while a group of Marines, one of whom was an EMT, rushed to give first aid. One of the Marines, Jason, was able to get Tony's keys and belongings from his car and call my mom (Tony had the presence of mind to remember that calling me would be pointless as I was working and likely did not have a signal). Tony was brought via ambulance to Kennestone's ER, and though finding a room in the ER proved to be a tricky feat, he eventully found privacy and rest next door to a screaming overdose victim, then a couple who were forcibly removed from the hospital after verbally attacking the nursing staff (it was a very lively evening to say the least). Anyway, only 5 hours after being struck by a car, estimated to be traveling about 30 - 35 mph, Tony was discharged from the hospital with no broken bones or internal injuries. The woman working the discharge desk was shocked to see Tony leaving because she had driven past the scene of the accident on her way into work. The hospital tab was not even close to being finalized when we left, but we were imformed with a smile that it was "only" $5000. I guess she could smile because she knew we wouldn't be paying :-) The process of cleaning dirt, grass, and glass shards out of raw skin was unpleasant, and neither of us slept very well, but we're VERY happy that Tony appears to be healthy. He's extremely sore and extremely medicated, but he wanted me to pass on this update to all his GUTS friends. Ever the determined runner, he has already vowed that this will not keep him from running Oak Mtn. on the 22nd (I am not yet convinced, though)! We're very grateful for the concern expressed by everyone at GUTS. We'll keep you posted -- rest assured that there will be a tongue-in-cheek race report about this in the next newsletter, complete with pictures and grossly exaggerated details of heroism and invincibility (Tony will be writing it, if you can't tell) Be careful out there! Allison Gonzalez

sorry Tony that you didn't get a mug. we were thinking maybe we could make you a special award. at least you showed up!
the driving was pretty - lots of snow flurries. lots of snow on the ground and not much on the road.
the run was pretty - lots of snow, BUT we didn't get to run to the top (Hogpen) as the road was closed which really sucked. so we ran 1/2 way up and then back down.
lots of GUTS folks were there, not many people in general as most wussed because of the weather

If anyone wants to meet us for dinner beforehand we are going to be at Ted's Montana Grill at 6pm.
Ted's is located in the same shopping strip as the theaters. So close that we could just walk over to the theater after dinner.
cya then!

This movie sounds pretty interesting (for us runners). The Spirit of the Marathon is a documentary following Deena Kastor and several other marathoners as they prepare for Chicago 2005. The movie was shown in Chicago theaters before this year's heat debacle and received good reviews (from runners). it will be shown again around the country, but for one night only: January 24, 2008, 7:30 PM. To learn more you can enter your zip code at FathomEvents.com to see what theaters in your area will be hosting the movie. I know Barrett Commons AMC and the Atlantic Station theaters will be showing it. Tickets are $12.50. For more info: www.active.com/running/Articles/Spirit_of_the_Marathon.htmI plan to go! Maybe there will be a lot of GUTS Folks there?

Did i ever mention i was on the Atlanta Track Club board?! Y'all elected me.....now i am an executive officer, but still i only heard about this just before the news broke.
Oddly enough, last time i was on the board we had a similar thing happen. For those that remember, we used to turn at Colony Square and run thru the big park gates and down thru the park itself (i loved that finish). But that had to change due to construction. And we will change again.
Please let me know your thoughts and suggestions and i will be sure and consolidate and take them back to the ATC. While i am at it.....we are also in the midst of beginning a multi-year strategic planning process - that is to say - what does the track club really want to be? Suggestions for that would also be very welcome.
thx! janice
