For those who may have met fellow GUTS member Bob Kassow, i am very sorry to pass on the sad news of his death this past weekend. He died in an automobile accident, driving one of his beloved mini-sports cars.
Bob was a big barrel chested guy, with big lungs (he was a former world class biker), a big heart and big smile. He tended to lean to one side of the trail and knock you into the bushes, but he always happy to see his fellow GUTS runners and join in for a run. I can thank Bob for showing me the insides of the banana bridge before it was finished, instructing me how to fly downhill (although i am still no good compared to him), showing me a brand new baby doe on the side of the trail, letting us all know about a cool hawk's nest near the CCC field, and of course for being a geniune and caring friend. I will miss seeing him on the Kennesaw trails and joining us for our north GA trail runs.
Here is information regarding services this week: Jane and family will receive friends at Carmichael’s funeral home, 1130 Whitlock Ave. Marietta GA 30064, 5-8 pm Friday 12/8. Funeral services will be Saturday morning, 10:30 am, at the Acworth Ward building, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5055 Holt Rd, Acworth, GA 30101. Following the service, interment will be at Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery, immediately north of Whitlock Ave., near Carmichael’s, and there will be a procession from the church to the gravesite.
Life is short, play hard.

this is what happens after too many years at corporate
just be glad i didn't go into acronym-speak. here's a corporate sample: IT SC WMS/YMS & TMS MPRs were CRB, DRB, & IRB specific to MA-WMOS & TPM, but not HDS or YOW.
Believe me that sentence makes sense! j

it's been awhile since i did't know where i was going out at kennesaw. be glad to show you the trail sometime
i'm not sure i fully follow your path, but here are a couple of simple things to remember. from the visitor's center if you stay on the main path (you did this i think) then you will cross a road after 3.5 miles or so - this is Burnt Hickory. Keep going and you will cross Dallas Hwy/Whitlock Rd in another 1.5 miles, shortly thereafter going straight you hit cheatem hill monument. if you cross another road that is cheatem hill road and you are on your way to Kolb farm the farthest southern point in the park. on the way back you essentially pass the same roads although sometimes at different places.
if you don't have a veteran to go with i suggest out and backs for awhile til you get a good feel for it, janice

ya know i really didn't think my comment that "maybe volunteering should be required as part of the permit" went over all that well, but read below from superintendent Dan. I plan to go on the 12th and help out.
Cross Country and Track Coaches, and Running Club Representatives,
It was very obvious from the attendance and responses at the meeting on July 27 that all of the teams and running groups really enjoy and appreciate the experience of being able to run and train at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. If you would like to give back to the park, we really, really do need your help with maintaining the trails. As I shared at the meeting, all of our trail maintenance is accomplished by volunteers. The Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club coordinates volunteer work days on the second Saturday of every month, year round, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The next work day is on Saturday, August 12. Thanks for your consideration - I hope to see some of you there.
Below is an email from Richard Angeli, President of the Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club. He wanted to attend the meeting on July 27, but his message below captures what he had to share. ***NOTE I didn't include this because it was really long and re-hashed the whole history-give back to the park story***
Sincerely,
Daniel R. Brown Superintendent National Park Service Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park 905 Kennesaw Mountain Drive Kennesaw, GA 30152

The meeting was held last night and it was packed! So much so that they turned some folks away. Anyway, here are the notes that I took. Comments anyone?
KNBP Meeting Notes – Team/Club Park Use 7-25-06
There was an overflow crowd and they turned some folks away. I'm sorry if anyone did not get to attend because of that.
Dan Brown, superintendent led the meeting; also in attendance from the park – chief ranger Lloyd Morris
Dan introduced himself; he is a long time national park employee, worked at 10 other parks across the US; was a former cross-country and marathon runner (sub 3 hours!); also rides horses
About 1.5M users per year at KNBP; 2nd busiest Battlefield to Gettysburg, but it is considered a small park, and receives a small park budget based on it’s size; 160K cars pass through the park per day
Complaints-Messages-Concerns the park has received from visitors: Felt over-run; left in tears because park wasn’t the same What can we do about all the HS and college teams? Make it very hard to park Teams leave behind bottles and trash and sometimes hang “sweats” from trees/monuments Cheatham Hill-is a very important historical battle area (Dan read passage of vicious battle that took place there); none of us mind sharing, but schools disturb me – it’s one big track meet Teams park in grass Every school and club around uses park, make them go use Piedmont Park! Park Statement of Purpose – teams and clubs violate it
Dan admitted that some of the concerns were a little exaggerated, but they do consistently get complaints about the schools, and not other groups that use the park (ie horses, bird watchers, boy scouts)
Dan spoke about the park’s purpose (historical monument to battle of Altanta); read Historical passage; defined need for Special Use Permits (SUP)
SUPs – should be used for all “organized groups” that require management by the park; organized groups were defined by Dan as those having a charter, bylaws, 501c3 or incorporated status SUPs – will be issued on a yearly basis; fee of $100; Should include dates, times, location, size of group and number of vehicles; Will not be given for Saturday or Sunday after noon; Will not be given for having a “staging” area at Cheatham hill monument parking lot Additional requirements: team/club must attend a park presentation on the park history; team/ club must attend discussion on trail etiquette **GUTS suggested adding a volunteer requirement
Discussion: What about all the other obnoxious users of the park (horses, dog walkers with long leashes, etc) – this subject was quelled quickly by Lloyd-saying the purpose of the meeting was to discuss running teams How about using horse trailer parking area? Answer: Maybe When do we need to apply? Answer: soon When does this start? Answer: soon (but no date given) Define organized groups (my ed: needs to be done on paper, although Dan tried to explain his definition, see above, this question was asked multiple times in multiple ways) Can the fee be waived for non-profits? Answer: NO How will it be decided who gets a permit for a give day/time? First come, first serve? Lottery? Answer: TBD
Main Issues: Parking Multiple groups at same place/same time Use of sensitive park areas (ie Cheatham Hill) for staging areas Big groups running together on trail won’t yield/move over for other trail users
For now they will compile notes from the meeting, and comments and schedules collected from the team/club representatives. Once compiled they will make another announcement on how this process will work going forward. They did ask that we remember it may not be exactly right to begin with but they want to work with groups on the process.

We are going to run at the park (as a group no less) beforehand - maybe a little earlier than normal. Maybe 5:45? I don't mind running a little and/or being a little late.
Let me know if you are interested in running with us Janice

how did i completely miss this thread!??
craig pays them a lot
yes, i made the photographer and writer go up the mtn, but they insisted on driving...
yes, i wore my cool new GUTS gear to give a nice plug to the club
no, i did not break the 17 MINUTE barrier for 100 miles, that must've been a brain fart on the part of the writer, as he was a runner and should know the difference. but of course it was 17 HOURS (by 57 minutes so closer to 16), which is under 10 minutes a mile, a pace i came close to very recently....at Peachtree!

i have suspected that before, but did not really pay a lot of attention, especially since most miles i have done were on the bike, so i am less cognizant of the appropriate time for a mile. at scur we have 5K markers, and i never really heard anyone talk about issues wiht the standard silver comet path markers....maybe some of them could speak up on their experiences?

All, I don't know if you have heard the very sad news today, but Patty Foell, an ATC runner was hit and killed by a car aelry this morning near Emory. It is really hard to imagine right this minute that she is really dead, but they say it's true. She was a great runner, a mom, and a very nice lady. Please be careful out there. if i had enough GUTS to run that far yesterday, I would've yelled "Sooooo tired", but alas I was only up for the Gobble Jog. Much more low key and much shorter! :-) Also within jogging distance of the house.
Congrats to all those doing the Turkey Day run, it looked like GUTS was well represented and lots of folks had good times.
happy holiday weekend, Janice

Thanks everyone for your support and good thoughts during our run.
It was a lovely course. Classic English countryside. Much hillier and rockier than I expected, and thus slower (kinda like driving over there).
We could not have done it without Flo and her awesome adaptation to driving on the left and shifting with her left, and her crewing with my mom. They were both out there all day, and were always there and always upbeat...... even after we got lost for over an hour! That's a long story to be told some other time.
But we still won our division and finished before dark. ;D Our time was 14:42 and we were somewhere in the top 15 of 350 teams. cheers, Janice
