how far should my longest run be b/f the comet 100k race. my weekly mileage is about 50-80 miles. I had thought of doing a long run of 30 on the wknd, then the next wknd, one of 35+, about 2-3 weeks out from the race. will this be adequate?

I think a 35 mile run is about right. For each person it might differ according to their base mileage. But for you, it sounds like 35 or so would be a good distance, you could go a little further as long as you weren't straining. slug

I think 30-35 is fine, but I would make it three weeks out rather than 2 weeks. It's important not to get carried away, meaning you feel real good so you start looking at the watch to make sure you run a good time. This will not aid in your 100k effort. The hay is in the barn at this point, so concentrate on fueling/hydration/supplement combos on this run.
At the Ice Age 50 miler, they run a 35 mile run 3 weeks out and a 20 mile 2 weeks out. Many treat the 35m as a practice run and then the 20m at proposed race pace 2 weeks out. That may be much for some people, but I feel running an 1-1.5 hours at your planned race pace 2 weeks out helps in many ways.
Always better to arrive at the starting line 10% undertrained than 1% overtrained.
This 30+ miler is just covering ground. Strengthening the feet, tendons, mind, and areas your not aware of. Possibly do some or all of the miles in the shoes you plan to run the 100k in. This is a dress rehersal, nothing more, nothing less. Put no pressure on yourself that day.

thank all of you for your reassurance on my plan. i did 30 last week and it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be, i ran very easy, stayed hydrated and fed, tried to be light on my feet. i will go for 35-36 this wknd, and then begin to pull back on mileage. i am 42 and have run many marathons (pr around 3:15) and several ironmans so i have some history of "going long" but this will be my first ultra.
any suggestions for the last 15-20 miles of the 100k? is it fair to assume that it will be unlike anything i have ever experienced?? what should i be prepared for?

My suggestion would be to quit worrying so much and relax. You will do fine especially if you've done ironmans and marathons. Sounds like you have a good base, good training and the determination!!!!! There will be people out there for moral support as well!! Good luck and most of all have don't forget to have fun.

Per the last 20K of a 100K......
It can be tough. It can be different every time, but that last 20K sure can seem long. My suggestions - keep the pace, it's very mental at this point and you can fight off a slow down - keep your head straight, be sure and take some calories frequently so you can keep concentrating and performing well.
good luck, Jslug
