Cathy, are you OUR Cathy S, the 4" Cathy? Not that it matters, but I'm volunteering all day, counting and watching the beer (a very important job, watching the beer). Help is always needed (watching the beer, it can be so unruly). And I plan on running at least one loop early in the day, so someone will need to be in charge of the beer while I'm gone (we'll figure out the lap counting as we go). So consider yourself counted. Wear your running shoes in case you need a break of watching the beer and decide to do a loop.

Hey, they now have the full thon and the 1/2 on consecutive days instead of running them at the same time. That means we can run the 1/2, get the Daffy medal, then do the full and get the Micky medal!

I ran the Darkside 8 Hour run on Saturday night. I know the loop thing doesn't do it for a lot of y'all, but I LOVED it! Going in to it, I was worried about being driven crazy by the 1/4 mile track. I'd done three 24-hour runs, but they were all on mile+ loops. I settled on a 4:1 strategy (run 4 loops/walk 1) and maintained that for almost 5 hours. After that I started getting sick...my body isn't used to being up and running 3:00 am! So I had to adjust the ratio a bit. Was able to pull through it, finishing with measly 34.5 miles. Not the distance I'd wanted, but it'll do. This was also my first time to run on a rubberized track. It was like running on carpet And how Scott talks his friends into sitting up all night and counting laps I'll never know...that HAD to be hard work! Overall, four thumbs up (<---obscure Simpsons reference)

To check maximum HR, run hard for 5 minutes and then put in a 1 minute "sh!t, its a bear!" sprint. What does it report for your actual HR under these conditions? If I run "hard" for 5 minutes, the bear will eat me ;D I was wondering about raising my fitness level. Another calculator I've used shows my max HR at 191, so I'm thinking you're probably right. My resting HR, after lying in bed reading for several minutes, is around 70.

Got a Suunto T1 Heart Rate Monitor for an early b'day present (thank you, honey). Ran with it for the first time this morning, and I'm hoping y'all can enlighten me on what was going on. According to it, my entire run was a near-death experience, hovering around 90% of max HR and higher, even though I was running a nice slow (much slower than normal) pace and breathing very easily. My target zone was 70-80% for aerobic training. I passed that almost immediately. I'm guessing my max HR is wrong, but here's the deal: it figures your max HR based on a variety of factors such as age, weight, fitness level, etc. So my theory is I over estimated my fitness level. I chose level 7, over 3 hours per week of heavy physical exercise such as running, which seems right for me. But perhaps my current level is less/more than that? If so, would raising my fitness level estimate raise my max HR? Anyway, it figured my max at 185, which seems right for a 40 year old female who weighs more than she should So my next theory is that I was actually working harder due to: 1) weather (around 90% humidity at 6:30 am) 2) bodypump yesterday am left the legs feeling "heavy". 3) haven't adapted to early morning workouts yet. Thoughts? Should I adjust my max HR/fitness level, or just do what the darn thing tells me. I would have to walk a LOT to stay in my target 70-80% range. Heck, I was at 65% just walking across the parking lot.

Thanks richcheese and others, Good info to know. This forum is excellent to exchange info like this. It is also good to have members with medical backgrounds. As a CPA I will assist in answering some of those questions concerning "tax running issues". Fred As a 501(c), GUTS may take you up on that ;D
