And I do mean morning. I plan on running 2 loops of the entire Kennesaw trail for a total of 32 miles (50K+). I also plan on starting at around 1am Saturday morning from the front of the Prez's driveway. I plan to run counterclockwise, then clockwise, getting the mtn over with early on and then getting back to the top just before sunrise. Anyone want to join for any part of the run? I will be carrying my own hydration and food, but will fill back up between loops 1 and 2. Why am I doing this? Hellgate. Reply to this post if you want to join. If we get enough people it could possibly become a new GUTS event (or not).

Dang Matt! I would love to join you for a loop but I have to drive my daughter to Tuscaloosa on Saturday. We are going to have to leave really early to get her there in time for a function before the Alabama game. The 1 a.m. start is tempting but I'd be too tired for my drive ... especially the drive back to Atlanta after the football game!
Have fun and be careful!

Anyone notice how Colonel has some excuse, usually involving his daughter, about why he can't run??? ;D

Yes it is "just" a training run. It will be longest training run in terms of both time and distance for me. I guess I'll be doing it alone. Maybe I'll see some of you on the trails as I am finishing.

;D back to back 30 or 40 is a real training run ;D you should love those mountains they love you be careful and don't fade on your pace in the dark the dark hills of kennesaw are just like those nights in bed just go with instinct and feel if you don't fall down 3 or four times then u r not really tiying the real stuff

Hey Matt, how did the run go?

I guess the run went all right. I did not finish all 32. I went for about 21 and 4 1/2 hours. I didn't finish because I got cold. I wore a lightweight windbreaker that I was trying out for the first time and found out that it did not wick at all. I was feeling fine after the first loop, but I put on a dry shirt that was less warm. When I put the windbreaker back on, it was wet on the inside and my shirt quickly got soaked. I was unable to keep warm after that, and turned around after a few miles.
I was tired, not from running, but from being up all night. I realized that running by yourself at night is very lonely and more difficult than I thought it would be. The time seemed to creep along and the rustling in the bushes and glowing green eyes of the deer kept me from being able to relax and zone out. In spite of the failure, I have a much better idea of what I'll be facing at Hellgate. At least at Hellgate I won't be by myself and will have aid stations to look forward to.

Sounds like a great learning experience. A couple of weeks ago was the first time I had ever run trails at night. Even though I was running with the group it seemed like you run and run and never make progress. I guess that is the difficulty about running in darkness.
Sorry I couldn't make it. I thought I had the wife convinced at one point to let me do the 1:00 AM start but then she changed her mind and went back to calling me crazy. It's probably for the best. Even without a late night run I was feeling pretty sleepy on the drive back from Tuscaloosa.

My wife did call me crazy. That drive back from Tuscaloosa probably seemed even longer after that result.

loved your training report \
that's what it takes; trying it out and seeing what happens
it really won't seem so lonely at an event, where you willl have other runners and aid stations, etc
