Advice needed.
I'm in training for the SCUR coming up in 9 days. Have some 20 mile runs in Jan and finished a 50K last year, although I am slow.
I came down with the stomach bug, went to the doctor Wed because I couldn't keep anything down and the doctor's office called me back in today because my white blood cell count shows a bacterial infection. Started taking strong antibiotic today but still feel like crap.
Does anyone have experience with being sick a week before a short ultra?
If I feel better by race day can I gut it out? Or will the 50K show that I am not recovered causing a DNF? None of the running books I have address this issue.
If I can't run, I would like to volunteer to help with the race in any capacity I can. Who do I contact to volunteer.

Glad you were able to GUT it out Fred, but sorry that you had been sick.
Someone from the medical field (Rich?) might be able to answer you better, but i know that taking anitbiotics makes you feel really lousy when trying to run (even though they are making you better for what ails ya)
my guess is that your training helped get you thru the race, but you likely weren't at your best after being sick and on anitbiotics

One thing that I would caution (from what I have heard from numerous members of an Ultra Running list, not personal experience or scientific knowledge) is that ligaments can weaken while on antibiotics and are at a much, much higher risk for tear and injury. Anyone please chime in if you've also heard this. I would be very cautious. Hope you feel better soon!

I believe this applies to specific antibiotics. A class of antibiotics with a "q" in it. I'll look later, I just didn't want everyone to stop their meds!

Here's the response form a pharmacist and a doctor: "It is the Fluoroquinolone type antibiotics (levaquin, cipro, norfloxacin(noroxin), gemifloxacin,Tequin(gatifloxacin), moxifloxacin(Avelox)). There are many other quinolone type antibiotics but these are the more common ones. It can take up to 2 months for tendons and ligaments to be 100% after fluoroquinolone therapy."

i wasn't suggesting stopping the meds, just a realistic view of how you might feel taking them. i spent a year on cipro and it pretty much sucked, but i kept taking them. i never had a problem with tendons or anything, it just made me very tired, more easily sunburned, and it effected other meds (ie made em not work)
i suppose i got used to it after awhile

What I've gleaned about the Fluoroquinolone [Thanks, Phil] class of antibiotics is that runners should ask about alternative antibiotics. tinyurl.com/2mwlah(Scroll about halfway down or search for "tendon") I don't think I'd take them at all. If I did take them I wouldn't run, even for a while after I finished them. Scary!

Thanks for the advice about meds. I wasn't on any of them which effects tendons. Because of these suggestions I looked up side effects and found out fatigue is associated with the meds I took. I thought my biggest problem was not being 100% from being sick and had no idea about the negative effect of meds. Thanks again for the advice.
I was glad to finish and was about 1 min per mile slower than my marathon pace last year. Certainly the SCUR is an easier course than the marathon (Louisville Derby) I ran last year and I felt except for being sick that I was in better shape. Hard for me to know if the cold weather was a negative factor.
Good race I enjoyed the opportunity to GUT it out. Hope to be at our training run next Tuesday.

Thanks richcheese and others, Good info to know. This forum is excellent to exchange info like this. It is also good to have members with medical backgrounds. As a CPA I will assist in answering some of those questions concerning "tax running issues". Fred
