Looking for any information on this run. Trail conditions, should you carry your own H2O, how does it compare to sections of Kennesaw Trail or anything that you think would be helpful for a first time at the race.

ABSOLUTELY carry your own fluids, especially if you're running the full marathon. THey've run out both years I've run it.

Carry electrolyte caps also - it is warm, and some sweaty climbs. I did not pace well last year, went out too fast, hadnt enough fuel or liquid, and pretty much did the death march from mile 12-13 on, totally unhappy. Its probably a fun race if your not feeling likle hammered p**p.

Here's an elevation profile from last year. I believe the aid stations for the half were at the top of the hill (approx. 3.5 mi and 10 mi) and at the turnaround (approx. 7 mi). My foot pod had the distance at just under 14 mi, but close enough for me.

This is my first post...
Confirming what the folks above said. I had severe cramps last year the last 3 miles of the 1/2 (the descent). Water stations, though well stocked for the 1/2 are too far apart. You need gels, sports drink and as the poster above suggests, the electro caps.
That was my first trail run ever last spring and I thoroughly enjoyed it (even with the pain).
Also, if you're going to go for broke and shoot for a PR, suggest you bring a friend with you to drive you back. I grimmaced, twisted and contorted the whole drive back to Atlanta as the cramps came in waves over me.
Enjoy it!

I feel that if you carry a hand bottle or a waist water bottle, you'll be ok. I carried 20oz and 2 gels last year and was good to go. But be careful - the race starts at 9am and it got really hot last year!! I would have been screwed had I been doing the full, but then again, I would have run it slower and carried more fluids and supplies! It's a runnable course, and a great time!!

Just confirming the above. Look at Paul's elevation profile...mile 3 is a killer. A 20-oz. water bottle is mandatory. Gels are optional (they have gummi bears and pretzels and etc.) Heat will almost certainly be a factor (it's May in Georgia, after all). See you there!

I ran the full last year. It was my first marathon and trail race, and I made every mistake in the book. My longest run leading up to it was 100 minutes long. I did not walk a step in training.
I got to the start line in running shorts, hat, and shoes. Looking around I noticed just about everyone else had some form of water carrying device and some sort of pouch to carry provisions.
Things started out ok, I was going along fine, and at a pace which ended up way too fast for the conditions and course. At about 15 miles the wall came crumbling down. Cramps and just total fatigue. I did make it to the finish, but those last 10 or so miles were the worst I had ever "run".
So looking back I would have: Trained with some more longer runs, incorporating walking, especially up hills. Taken a hand-help water bottle and some electrolyte caps. The cramping was the worst part. Gone out slower, many people passed me in the last 5 miles. The climb up the mountain isn't the worst part of the race in my opinion, it was the gravel road part late in the race. I wore regular road shoes and the gravel killed my feet. Trail shoes would ahve helped a lot.
Overall, I ran this race last year in the most idiotic way possible and came out a wiser runner.

I'm curious about the pre-race pasta dinner from 6-9. Is it a drop-in kind of event? I can't get away from Atlanta till at least 6 PM.

I am registered as gail gibson f 44 for the half. I can send you the copy of my registration along with a letter to the race officials stating that I'm giving you my spot. Or you can contact the RD and tell them the situation so they can make an official switch so your name will be listed in the official results instead of mine . What ever you need just let me know. My regular email is gail2504@bellsouth.net

I am also looking for a spot. I called the race director and she said I was out of luck - no give and take whatsoever, and no waiting list. Would love to run this one. If you know of anyone who can't make it, please e-mail me at kraaken1@yahoo.com or call me: Jeff 678-923-3828
Thank you!!

Careful fellas - some RD's will ban you from all future events they put on if they catch you running under another person's name or bib... Im not saying I agree - im just saying.

From a RD perspective, it is an issue for at least 2 reasons, first the liability, in that the "borrower" has never signed a waiver, and therefore never released liability and it's an issue when the "borrower" places in the awards
For instance, say a guy borrows the number of a woman age 44. Then the guy proceeds to beat all the "real" women. Or beat all the women over 40. This causes serious issues with the awards.
if you are truly back of the pack then it matters less....but still if any issues come up with the runner, it is gonna be tough on the RD and the race crew, as they will have no info on who the runner truly is and they are left open to liabilities

I agree. I did receive an email back from the RD stating what others said above. I was OK giving my slot away if there was a transition process. However, I do have ethical and logistic reservations (as Janice mentioned) about someone running as me. Even though its a low likelihood, just think of the mess if something happened to the racer. Not that I would mind the PR This race filled rather quickly and sign ups began in early November. I'll try to post a note as soon as I hear they have begun for '08.
