Ok I am wondering what everybody else does about "Fueling" during their long training runs.( Figure actual ultras have lots of eats along the way).
Anyhow let me bore you with some details of why I ask. I have run a bunch of marathons a couple of ultras and generally thought I knew what I was doing ( running slow, eating gels, sport drinks) Lately I have been bonking at the 12 mile mark even running pretty slow for me. Does not seem that gels are working.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks Dazed and Confused Dan

Could be you're just overtrained and tired and need a break! Take a rest. ;D Do you do your long runs with anyone? That usually helps too. Everyone is different and everyone has different needs. If I know I am going out for a longer run, I eat a good breakfast first. I usually carry some Sharkies, Gobstoppers, Sport Beans for the run. Depending on the length of the run, I will carry a handheld water bottle if necessary and something more substantial like a moon pie!

Peanut Butter PowerBars are my staple. With Sharkeys or Sports Beans added in. Maybe a Snickers if I'm lucky.

Thanks for all the great and tasty food/fuel ideas ( I can usually count on a maple frosted doughnut for energy, just kinds hard to carry on a run!!).
See out on the trails!! Dan

Yeah Dan. Thanks for the Maple Frosted Donuts, they were delicious. By the end of the night, people were eating donuts on a stick, heating them up like a marshmallow by the fire.

For the really long runs, Matt Carpenter discussing his fueling for Leadville here (about 2/3 of the way down the page): www.skyrunner.com/story/2005lt100.htmI like the idea of practicing the way you intend to fuel in the race. When I'm doing shorter runs I just drink water but stick to the every 10 minutes. Also, for those of mortal persuasion who still think they have a top finish in them, Charles Corfield came in third at Leadville 2 years ago at the age of 48. He claims the recipe he shares as a part of this story was the primary factor: www.dailycamera.com/news/2007/sep/20/corfields-super-fuel-corfields-rocket-fuel-48/I haven't yet but will probably give his concoction a try. He is a rocket scientist after all. Those rocket scientists know everything! I got a kick out of the second of the two comments at the bottom. The guy finishes third and credits his fueling and somebody thinks he may have done it wrong. Go figure!

Very interesting. Sounds totally disgusting but if it works what the hell!! Also once again easier to carry than donuts on a stick!!!
Thanks for all the advice. So far I am following the chill out and rest advice. Gonna do the Birmingham marathon on the 15 th.
We'll see if rest helps!!!
Run On, Dan

If and elite runner like Scott Carpenter can consume 300 cals an hour from sipping his special blend of Carb Boom & Endurance but is burning about 700 cals an hour where are the other 400 cals coming from?
Just wondering Dan PS rest did seem to help this week

I find that a PB&J 30 minutes before a run helps calm the tummy and then Fig newtons go down smooth during a run. The best part is 20 minutes after you eat them you still can crunch the little seeds stuck in your teeth.
No food or water in 20 miles is just plain old silly. The more you can comfortably eat the better you will feel both during and after a run. One word, Glycogen.
They nailed it earlier everyone is different, play around with different combinations until you find what your stomach can tolerate.

I was not implying you could not cover the distance. It sounds like this is a new runner, and I didn't want them to think they needed to go out on a 20 miler without food or water, or that they were in some way lacking because they need to fuel.

Well actually... Lets say the average person burns 700-800 cals an hour. Running an 8 minute mile for twenty miles (pretty decent pace) is 2.5 hours. That's 1750-2000 calories. So about 250-500 over the 1500 mark. Now if he keeps "bonking" at about 12 miles, apparently his long run training isn't doing much to start metabolizing fat. And he also appearanly has a high metabolism rate too. Therefore, common math would tell someone that he should probably be having something during the run to not flatline himself. Not every nutrition plan is the same so just because you can run the distance with nothing dont mean that jdog's gotta HTFU just because he cant... Anyway, ever tried Glycoserin?

I guess Fat is where the additonal cals must come from. It is very interesting that every runner eats and feels and runs differently.
Thanks for all the food for thought.

And is that a problem? I mean, I would probably have to kill something if I was stuck doing short stuff like 5's and 10's... And actually, it dont make me any less capable... But whatever I'm not trying to start anything so I'll just shut up...
