About a month ago, I ran the Xterra Trail in Jackson. GA. About 3/4 through I recall stepping on a rock or root - small one - right on the ball of my foot around the 3rd toe. It didn't really hurt, but I remember hitting it. I finished the race pretty strong (for me). Later that day, I began to feel sore. I have been virtually unable to push off on it since. When I start to run and try to push, not only does it hurt, but also feels like there is an object in my foot, right on that spot. I imagine it is swelling, and haven't gone to the doc - thinking it is just a deep bruise or contusion. And if it were a break or fracture - what's a doc gonna do about it anyway other than say lay off it. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Sally - I remember you saying you hit a rock or root and broke a bone in your foot. Are you healed? If so, how long did it take? I am trying to be patient, but it is really really hard. I have finally broken down and scheduled an appointment with my orthopedic doctor. And this may sound like a crazy question, but I have a friend who has MS and has bouts of leg pain. Someone recommended that he try marijuana to address the pain, and he swears that it inhibits the pain, sometimes almost immediately. Anyone ever hear of any runners who have tried this "remedy" to help ease the pain related to long runs and wear and tear?

I had a bruise on the ball of my foot I got in a cross country race in high school that sounds like what you have. It hurt for about 6 months as I continued to run on it after about 2 weeks off, but I would still see the doc.
As for the wacky tobacce I'm sure it will numb the pain. It will also make you feel really smooth snow boarding or mountain biking unless you over indulge and then you will fall down a lot.
Good luck,
