GUTS Training Run & Trail Work Day
Kennesaw Mountain
Sunday, May 10th, 2009 (Mother's Day)
Training run @ 7:15 a.m.
Trail work @ 9:00 a.m.
Cook-out after trail work
First a nice run, then some cross-training trail work (giving back to Mother Earth and Kennesaw Mountain Park), and finally good food at the GUTS cook-out.
Meet at 7:15 a.m. at the visitor center for the run and hit the trails for as long as you want. GUTS will fuel you up with juice and bagels after. (All trail workers are requested to park their cars at the park Service area, up the hill to the right of the Visitor Center, past the superintendent's office. Just drive past the traffic cones and DON'T run over the new park superintendent!)
At 9:00 a.m., we’ll meet and park at the park Service area (see above), for trail work. No need to bring anything except maybe your favorite work gloves. If you want to use your own tools, bring them along too. Plan to work 3 – 4 hours.
A cook-out will then take place at the home of the (GUTS) President, directly after fixing up the trails. GUTS will supply food and drinks but please feel free to bring a dessert or side dish to share.
Please e-mail GetGuts@hotmail.com with the subject line 'TRAIL WORK DAY' so we can buy enough grub for all.
You'll probably want to wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt (there be poison ivy out thar'), perhaps a hat and even some rain gear. Also: Although this is, strictly speaking, an event for GUTS members, we won't turn away any workers. (But please RSVP.)
To save time you may fill out and print the following form:
www.kennesawmountaintrailclub.org/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/kmtcvolunteerservicesag.pdf Use YOUR name in the "Name of Volunteer or Group Leader" section. You only fill out this form every so often. However, if you haven't filled out one recently, we'll need a new one.
The planned work will be on the GUTS "Goat Trail" between Burnt Hickory Road NW and Whitlock Ave NW. We'll start work at the Burnt Hickory Road end (we'll truck/van pool to the start) and work our way south. The work will primarily be erosion control, tree branch trimming and brush clearing. I'll be checking this week to see what other projects may be needed in "our" area.
Donald
P.S. There is STILL a new trail planned in the future. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted when work actually starts on it. (Don't be holding you breath though, these things take LOTS of time...)
P.P.S. Yes, I said essentially the same thing last year. (Really, LOTS of time. Think glaciers...)
