Or sign this one: ndegreen.epetitions.net/If you think excessively paving away green space, or at least paving away people's front yards, is a bad idea.

Oh, sure, sign it if you are in favor of FEWER safe places to run and ride your bike! This petition looks to be from homeowners who don't want to sacrifice any lawn, probably cause that's as far as they can walk/run for the county's side of the story check this link dot.cobbcountyga.gov/lower-roswell/index.htmat the bottom of the page is a pdf with diagrams

The diagrams show what I was talking about. Thanks. The original proposal was for a 4 ft bike lane on each side of the road, a center turn lane to be added, a 5 ft wide sidewalk, plus a 10 ft wide "multipurpose lane". That's a whole lot of asphalt.
If safety is the concern for runners/walkers, a sidewalk is enough ... or the multi-use trail. Why both? If bikes can use the muli-use trail, why have another 8 ft of bike lanes?
And did anybody notice the number of old growth trees which are about to be cut down?
Like I said, I run down thru there alot and I agree it is the most unsafe run (other than the run down Paper Mill to Sope Creek) that I do, but I think paving over half the county is not the answer. Give me a sidewalk and I'll be happy. (one can even give the bikers their choice of a mulit-purpose trail or the 4 ft bike lanes)
Sorry for the rant. I'm not too confident in County zoning these days. We had a nice big wooded corner lot near the entrance to our neighborhood. The County let a developer build on it. He clear cut all of the trees, built two or three huge townhome structures (I think about 8-10 were planned), then the developer goes belly up, townhomes remain empty, lot remains in a state of unfinished construction mud, and the once beautiful lot is now an eyesore. grrrrr. (and this is only a half mile or so from where the County now wants to widen Lower Roswell and cut down even more trees.)

Oh, by the way, as long as I am ranting .... ... all of the flowering trees on the right side of this picture, and the bushes, will be cut down and the pavement will extent right up to the brick wall on the right. On the left, all of those trees will be cut down as well, leaving nothing be the grass in people yards to look at. The amount of paving they will do will be the equivalent of putting a six-lane highway right thru a sleepy residential area. Would you want that in your neighborhood? BTW - you can tell from the picture, that a sidewalk added to the right side, would not disturb any of the trees and would give bikes and runners a safe area to ride/run.

I live over in the East Cobb area too. I hate the over development too.. but I really really think we need at least a side walk and a bike lane on Lower Roswell and for that matter Paper Mill too. I hate to see the old trees go but....
I hope they actually start the dang project soon Dan

I think if they put the 4 ft bike lanes on each side of the road, and a sidewalk, they shouldn't need anything else. Actually, I would be happy with just the bike lanes ... since Lower Roswell doesn't even have a shoulder to run on. If I had a bike lane to run in, I wouldn't use the sidewalk anyway.

As long as everyone is chiming in...
Does anyone know why there is such a big margin between the pavement and the sidewalk? It's not specified, but it looks like it's going to be 3 to 4 feet wide. Why not reduce it?

I wondered the same thing. Same thing with the multi-use. Why 10 feet? And then they reduced it to 8? Why 8? If the bikes are going to use the bike lane up on the road, why does the multi-use have to be two bike lanes wide? Move south. The mutt and I counted 16 deer on our run the other day. ... Not a bad idea, but then I would be too far away from Kennesaw Mtn and I'd miss all of the Tuesday night GUTS runs.

(one can even give the bikers their choice of a mulit-purpose trail or the 4 ft bike lanes) i don't think they should add the turn lane. if they left that out there would be plenty of room for the bike lanes and at least the multi-use lane! Not sure why they have a sidewalk & multi-use, but as a pedestrian who is used to nothing, I'd rather have both than neither Not sure where that photo was taken. If the county had done their job to begin with and had required the neighborhood to include a safe sidewalk or multi-use lane along it's boundary (and up to the next sidewalk) to be built when the neighborhood was built, well then the pretty cherry trees would never have been planted there or they'd be back 8 feet It kills me to see these giant fancy neighborhoods that spend tons of bucks on big fancy brick walls and nada on a safe place to walk/run/bike. Or my favorite is where they build the exact minimum sidewalk required (about 100 feet past the entrance drive) and it connects to nothing! A bunch of unconnected sidewalks. Blah!

Does anyone know the latest on the trail extension from the 2M loop that ends at Morgan Falls to the park across the river? Also how much running is there in the park on the Fulton County side (off Roswell road)?

What needs to happen is that the trail from Johnson Ferry needs to extend all the way up to Hyde Farm in a similar loop fashion as exists at the end of Columns Drive. The bridge would be a spur off that trail near Morgan Falls extending to the park. Currently there isn't much a running area on the Fulton side - certainly not downstream near the river. I run from JF up to Hyde Farm frequently, but in the growing season, the plants are very thick and poison ivy is prevalent along the route. You must cross 3 sewer pipes along the way - no big deal. Currently best in late fall and winter. Saw a big, healthy coyote last time I ran it about 3 weeks ago. Dodged poison ivy plants for much of it. But the layout is there for an awesome loop that would be about a 5 miler round trip. Adding a bridge across the river to the park would add at least 1 more mile.

Thanks Jeff. Can you imaging if they could build a trail on the oppsite side of the river to hook up back at Cochran shoals in an oval shape? That would be awesome but not likely.

Theoretically, that would be awesome, but unlikely. The Fulton side of the river has cliffs along it in places, which would make a trail very, very difficult to construct. I would be happy with a loop on the Cobb side - it is very doable - and practically begging for a decent trail to be laid there. How nice would it be to start at Johnson Ferry - with ample parking, then do a loop that circles Hyde Farm at the halfway point, and has one side of the loop along the Hooch, and the other side through a beautifully wooded stretch. The park system already has all the land. It just needs to link it up properly, with a wide enough trail so that we don't have to run through poison ivy in the spring and summer!
