Well actually the Cohutta and Big Frog.
I have mapped a 55+/- mile loop route that tours the Cohutta and Big Frog Wilderness areas. The route touches the two river drainages (Jacks and Conasauga Rivers), a good sampling of the Big Frog trail system, Jacks River Falls, Panther Creek falls, etc.
Anyway I am looking at doing this run sometime in mid May or June (Solstice weekend?). If anyone has an interest let me know. FYI, probably no support (really only an option for one), limited opportunity to bail out, lots of opportunity to HTFU.
Who's up for some fun?

i was thinking of heading up that way mid-may for a panther creek jaunt (4 hrs or so). jay and i did a 40 miler (took us about 13 hours) in that area a few years back with one water stash above the jacks river falls parking area on the way up big frog and self support the rest of the way.
if you haven't run that area much, beware the cohutta time warp

Sounds like a great route. You have me looking at calender. I can't believe the only dates that would work for me are June 27 or 28 !! ( 3 kids, 1 wife, and a job will do that to a running schedule ) Gotta question about what you do for water on a route like that? Water purification tabs?? Thanks Dan

depends on which route you do. there is no water on the ridges and plenty down in the valleys. i generally use a filter bottle, or you can use iodine or clorox.
if your route takes you up and over big frog, you will have a pretty long section without water. the last time we did big frog up from jacks, we dropped water and a bit of food where the big frog trail leaves the road a bit above the jacks river parking area and didn't have a creek crossing for another 6-8 miles or more. the big frog section, especially in the summer, is steep and tough and you do not want to run out of water there.
if you plan the route well, you can set it up where you cross a creek every 4 miles or so (with the exception of what i mentioned above)

The route was set up with water in mind. That is enough to not go too long without chance to resupply but not so much that your doing river crossings for miles on end (not so pleasant in winter). As far as treatment in concerned I am not a model citizen I haven't used a filter since 1989 (when I thru hiked the AT - filter went in the trash after a couple of 100 miles). I have NEVER gotten sick from water issues. I do have a Steripen that I usually carry but rarely use. Probably will use on this trip as some of the water sources are streams. As opposed to on the AT where it pretty easy to plan on having springs (not creeks) as water sources. Water is the main reason I am planning this trip now as opposed to the AT/BMT/DRT route. I am far less sure about water souces on the northern section of the DRT that I am anywhere on the Cohutta route. I haven't finalized my date(s) but will let you know - anybody is welcome to join me for all or part of the trip. I'll post the route later. Josh
