I am planning a 40 or so mile run on 4/25. NOW ON 4/23
Start at Amicalola State Park Visitors center. 8.8 miles to Springer on the Approach trail (the meat grinder) 6 m. - BMT from Springer to Three Forks. 4.1 m. - AT from Three Forks to Hightower gap 8.3m - AT Hightower gap back to Springer 10.8m - Approach trail/Hike Inn Trail back to Visitors center
Anybody want to join me? Plan on leaving Visitors Center around 7:00AM. Lots of miles with not so much backtracking.

Great run yesterday.
Lack of any leaves on trees and our first real warm day led to some water/salt issues at mid day but otherwise was very pleasant. The lack of leaves surprised me - its a good 3 weeks later than last year.
Ended it doing it in about 8:50 car to car - a lot faster than I thought. Even added a little to make it an even 40. Maybe I really am getting into shape. Will go for a run this PM to see how the legs really feel.
Most of the AT was very runnable in this section - Great long downhill (4 miles) from Springer to Three forks was just plain fun. Just the right gradient to be able to "cruise" down. Actually most of the AT from Springer to Hawk Mtn Shelter was this kind of easy grade.
My new route for warmer months from Amicalola is going to be the Approach Trail to Springer but use the Hike Inn trail on the return. It adds 2 miles to the trip but its more runnable and most importantly has 4-5 stream crossings that help with H20 issues and cooling.

Sounds like a fun route. I did look for your truck Friday morning:) It was warm running stair repeats (just 7). Thanks for the run route info Dan
