I'm not going to write a race report about this. Talking about my stupidity is too painful and the numbers speak for themselves. To give you an reference point to show how stupid I was I will just point out that all of my long "tempo" runs were in the 7:50 to 8:00 per mile range and I did a couple of ten milers in the 7:40 range. My "plan" for the race was to start out at 8:00 and pick up the pace a little as I settled in. The goal was to run a sub-3:30 and BQ. How in the heck I did what I did I'll never know. When I hit the first mile and saw the time I was shocked. I thought I was just under my 8:00 target. Then, I went from dumb to stupid by not making an adjustment. By mile 15-16 my legs were feeling like they were made of cast iron. By mile 19 I start thinking I might have a chance of squeaking under my goal if I can hold a nine minute pace the rest of the way. By mile 21 I knew that all was lost. Maybe I would have done better, towards the end, if I had tried walking some. Instead I just shuffled to defeat.
Here is my sad story. Study it and learn how not to run a marathon. And, when somebody tells you not to go out too fast, remember what you are about to read here and listen to their wise advice!

I get lost at Blue Ridge Mountain Masters and I go out way too fast at Rocket City. I must be the stupidest runner in the history of stupid runners. Oh well, live and learn.
I finished in 297th place out of 1271 finishers. 1318 crossed the half marathon marker. I'm not sure how many actually started the race but it was sold out (1500).
In my age group I finished 50th out of 162 finishers.
