Looking for a cool 100 or two for 2009. Lake Tahoe is absolutely beautiful. Anyone raced the 100 mile run? If the reports are great, anyone interested in signing up this year?

I ran almost the whole course last year on my way to DNFing in the 50 mile. The 100 mile is just 2 loops of the 50 miler, and the 50 miler contains a fair amount of out-and-back.
It is a beautiful course and seemed to be well organized, but there was an aid station that was missing, so you had to go 9+ miles between aid (no aid between 17 and 26 miles). It was also pretty darn hot that day, and you ran most of those 9 miles on a ridge line without a lot of shade. If you were one of the leaders of the 100 mile race, you then had to turn around and go another 9 miles without aid back the way you came because they didn't get that aid station going until about 2pm (7 hours into the race). Admittedly, they had to cart supplies in several miles, but if they advertised an aid station at mile 21, they should have had one there. At the very least, inform people at mile 17 that there would be no aid at 21. (Anyway, that is not why I DNF'ed; if you really want to know, read to the bottom of the post.)
That would be my only complaint about the race. It is at altitude (7-9500 feet), but the trails are not very technical at all. Since it is in the summer, it can be hot, but it's a dry heat compared to Atlanta. It is definitely one of the tougher 100s, as a 24 hour finish would have gotten you 10th place last year, and the field consisted of a lot of people would have been in contention at Western States had it not been cancelled. I think the website does a good job of providing information on the race, but let me know if you have any questions. I plan on one day tackling the 100, but not this year.
Why I DNFed: After running 101 miles at Umstead in early April, I ran not further than 6 miles a day and no more than 20 a week until the week before the race. The week of the race I ran 40 miles, including a very hilly 15 miler 2 days before the race. I did these 40 miles at and around Lake Tahoe because I was a counselor at Jeff Galloway's running camp. So I was not only undertrained, but also running on tired legs. In hindsight, I should have changed my registration to the 50K because I ended up getting in about 31 miles, but by trying to do the 50 miler I got to see just about the whole course.

hey Phil. I was actually looking at possibly doing the 50 miler this year as I will be on my way to Pinhoti as my first 100 in the fall. If you are looking at going out for that one, definitely give me a call, I am very interested.
