Just read it is cancelled due to fire proximity/air quality. Can you imagine the disappointment?

I once missed a marathon, because Atlanta got hit by an ice storm and all the flights were canceled the day before. But WS is an entirely different matter. It's the granddaddy of them all and so many people schedule their entire year around it...

it'll be interesting to see how they deal with the lottery/entrants for next year.

There's a limit to the annual number of participants. Since none will be running this year, the door should be opened to allow more people each year for the next few years. The annual limit is 369, but they are allowed to use a 5 year running average. That means that they could allow roughly 460 runners each year for the next 4 years. (I assume they'll allow this line of reasoning, but you never know with the government...) This might just be the perfect time to qualify and get in there!

That really sucks. Could they let the folks that were to run it this year roll over to next year?

i really feel bad for all the participants and the organizers. i know if it was me, i would've been on the plane to go out there before they canceled. so i imagine that most of the runners are already out there. it is just a real shame
the whole lottery thing is up in the air for next year

Trailrunnermag.com says: Runners on the official 2008 start list will be given automatic entry into the 2009 Western States 100. Now to see how they handle the lottery.
