I've a possible opportunity to crew for a multi-day point-to-point race. Does anyone in the group have any experience along these lines?
I'd like to hear the all good, the bad and the ugly stories (for multi-day crewing that is) you might have. Also any multi-day pointers would be good too.
[I believe I've got the "Don't go off drinking while crewing" lesson down, thanks to the Vogels.]
<EDIT: I updated the subject...>

;D you should never drink when crewing in a multi day or a 100M race. the runner that your are crewing expects you to be sober and help. ;D

I thought that last reply would be a thread killer and I was right. Since my last message I've officially become the one crew member for "my" racer. Oh, and I forgot to mention that this is a point-to-point, road course. Even if you haven't crewed, perhaps you folks have some experience running in this type of event? Thanks!

What race? When? Where?
Some key things to remember: you must not only take care of your runner, but also yourself. You will need to eat and rest, also. And if it's a race, ie Badwater, you'll even need to take electrolytes. You'll get blisters from being on your feet for so long. You'll chafe from being wet. Basically, you're at risk for suffering just like runner, without the running! Bring rain gear, sunscreen, bug repellant, a pillow and a blankie ;D
BTW, gitagoing, he said he knew that already. I think we all got it.

Race: Vol State Road Race (314 miles / 500+K) runvb2vb.com/VolState/index.htmlWhen: 7:00 Thursday, July 17 to July 27 (240 hour cutoff) Where: Start In Missouri (across the river from Hickman, KY), a few miles through Kentucky, 300 miles across Tennessee, a few miles through Alabama to finish on some trails off of Castle Rock Rd, Trenton, GA [basically MO/KY/TN intersection to TN/AL/GA intersection] Ouch! You make it sound like I'm going to suffer as much as my runner! I wonder if it's too late to enter the race... P.S. As my "reward", I'm planning to run a local, short race with a cutoff of only 1/30th the time.

Race: Vol State Road Race (314 miles / 500+K) Oh my, Vol State. That's a different animal entirely! I've crewed a couple of days there. I'd rather run it ;D Who are you crewing for? Take what I said earlier and multiply by 10. Things to keep in mind for Vol State: 1. Bathrooms can be few and far between. When taking advantage of nature, beware of poison ivy and red bugs. 2. The drunks like to throw things. 3. The locals are your friends. 4. Gary usually notifies all the cops and newspapers along the route, so they know you're out there. If asked by the law what the hell you're doing parked on the side of the road at 2:00 am, for pete's sake tell them! 5. Smile and wave at everyone ;D You are on the email list for Vol State, right?

I'm crewing for Don Winkley. He's shooting for 7 days which works out to about 45 miles per day. It sounds like there's a story behind #4. I'm guessing that "I'm waiting for some 70 year old guy to run up to my van." isn't going to cut it with out some additional explanation... I'm on the Vol State list, but I think I've missed out by not being on it since last year. If there was an archive, I'd be all over it. I'm thinking about entering, running as much as I can and then crewing the balance, but I haven't mentioned it to Dan yet.

Actually, that will work mostly. That's what I meant. He's alerted everyone, or a lot of them, so if you say "I'm waiting on my runner", they'll know what you're talking about. Especially when they see you runner limp up to the car ;D Not to mention all the runners gear you'll have scattered about your car, maps included. You're not breaking any laws, and they have no reason to distrust you. They're on YOUR side...the drunks are not. I'd suggest not running. You're going to be a lot busier then you'd expect. You can always run some early in the day when he's just starting. But after that, you'll be pretty active. Besides, who'll crew for YOU ?

That's why you weren't at the Dekalb 4 miler this morning. We missed you. Take pictures and notes so you can write a killer race report!

10 coins. Imagine if I was running the course! Don has found 8 coins already. Don has a theory that to run a good multi-day race; run 30 miles the day BEFORE the start. I'm starting to believe. Oh and my Hot to Trot outlook is getting better. I have a WHOLE new perspective on what is "hot" and what is "far". With 4 days of heat training under my belt, and probably 4 more to come, heat is less of a problem than before. The Sleeper has awakened!
