The newest GUTS events are now official!! There will be a marathon and 12 mile race on Sunday, November 2nd, at Fort Mountain State Park. If you have run there before, then you know this will NOT be an easy run. This will be HARD. I promise. Read more about it!

I haven't run there, but I've hiked the Gahuti with my son. A beautiful park.
This is exciting news.

This sounds fun - particularly the course description of: "Difficult, sometimes technical trails."
My two reference points are the Mountain Mist from this year and the Twisted Ankle 1/2 course - I'm curious how the trails from the upcoming event compare to the MM & TA. Any input would be appreciated.
Cheers!

Ive never been to the park, but Ive already registered. This will be my first TRIAL marathon ( done a couple of road marathons), although I have done several trail 15 k and Half marathon distances. I have fallen head over heels for trail running, and I'm ignorant enough to find descriptive terms such as hard, difficult, technical, attractive. Guess its time to start ramping up the hill work! Steve ;D

I don't know what the marathon course will be for the Fort Mtn event, but I'm willing to bet it will be tougher than both Twisted Ankle and Mountain Mist. It may have much longer climbs than both as some of the trails at Fort Mtn can climb for at least 1500 vertical feet. Many of the Fort Mtn trails are true singletrack and fairly technical -- much more so than Twisted Ankle, but maybe not as rugged as the worst parts of Mtn Mist. With all that said, it's been several years since I've run at Fort Mtn. I remember it as being tough, mountainous, and incredibly scenic -- basically a great place for a trail race.

i will get a course map posted eventually. But for those who have been up there before, the basic course is.... Lake loop (flat, but lots of roots) Gahuti northside/up (lots of climbing, technical, single track) Top of Mtn loop (flat, technical) Gahuti southside/"down" (more climbs, less technical) at that point the 12 milers will go back around the lake and finish, but the marathoners will take a turn and go up, up, up the rocks to the 301 bike trail. THey will run the entire 301 bike trail and come back to the lake to finish. The 301 is a great trail with a mix of technical single track and wider paths, with lots of climbs and descents. Great scenery too.

I live near Red Top and had hiked all the trails, so I was quick to sign up for the Rumble back in Feb. The run (my first trail run) was an awesome experience (well organized too). So, fast forward to June, I signed up for my first marathon, Chickamauga (Nov 8, 2008) and saw the Mystery Mountain run the very next day. Fort Mountain is one of my and my family's favorite parks. We camped there for an entire week last summer. I was really hemming and hawing, but finally decided to sign up for the twelve miler...I had to put in a long run anyway...might as well be at a great spot like Fort Mountain. I am signed up and looking very forward to another well organized race.

I snagged one of the cabins for the weekend. Plan to bring the family up for the weekend and run the race. Some of the family might be willing to help out if needed. Depends on how early they'd have to get up.

sorry you will miss it, because it is going to be so "bad", it will be really, really good
based on our training run today, i don't think many people will run the marathon in 4 hours.....
we did the marathon only "outside" loop, 13 miles in 2:50. and we really aren't slow runners, i swear! it was kind of humid, but not hot. if we did that pace on race day, that would be a 5:40, although i assume we could go a little faster on race day.
saw a bear AGAIN on the course today. i think the group of sweaty runners scared him. saw a big coyote too. Much fun was had by all ;D
