I was going to mail in my application today! I'm glad to hear that somebody else from Atlanta is going! It helps to have someone there who can identify the body. Actually, my brother is going to be there too. Or at least he says he is. He is running the Country Music Marathon the weekend before Strolling Jim. I have my suspicions as to whether he will show up. My plans are to drive to Huntsville on Friday and spend the night with my parents. I think Wartrace is about an hour and a half from my parents' house. That's a long drive for a 7 AM start, but I don't get to see my parents too much these days. Any tips on drop bags? I read the only support they have is water stations. I don't know if they allow drop bags. My brother's wife is supposed to crew for us, but if he doesn't show I might be high and dry.

Colonel. The Jim doesn't do drop bags. You have crew access the entire time, and a crew is definitely the way to go. A lot of folks go out the day before and stash stuff. If you make it in time for the Course Tour on friday, you can stash things at several spots along the way as Gary stops every few miles. There are also a lot of other crew vehicles, of course, and most are very helpful if you need anything. They're puttiing water and Conquest drink at a few aid stations. And a few snacks. But don't rely on those stations. The Jim is definitely a race where you need to supply yourself. Adds to the fun The course is marked by painted arrows on the road (I hear the yearly re-painting has been completed). And Gary paints "cute" little sayings on the road to encourage the runners Wartrace is a tiny town. There is one hotel and several B&B's in the area. One convenience store. That's about it. So keep that in mind when planning on picking up supplies. But you can get everything you need in Shelbyville just a few miles down the road. Now send in the application and we'll see you there!

Sarah, Well, as suspected, my brother just sent me an email to say he can't run Strolling Jim. He has a good excuse. He forgot about the father-daughter campout that his church is having. But that means I'm crewless ... or is it clueless? Since he is not coming up I might change my plans and stay in Tullahoma Friday night and drive down to parents' house after the race. I mailed my application today. So I'm committed. To the race that is, my wife is still working on the paperwork for the mental institution.

Now that you've mailed your check, I can be more honest Tullahoma is perfect, only a short drive away. But staying in Wartrace is nice because you just stumble out of your hotel at 6:50 and go. Do try to make the course tour on Friday afternoon. If you stash supplies along the course, keep in mind that critters live in the woods and they love snacks ;D I've had dogs get into my stash before, and once had raccoons open gatorade bottles another runner stashed! You may want to consider carrying a pack of sorts with your snacks. Just a thought.

I've got a North Face hydration pack that I usually wear on long runs. I was hoping to avoid using it for a 40 mile run though. Usually by the end of a twenty-mile run it starts wearing on my neck a little. That could be a severed jugular vein by mile 40! LOL Maybe I could take the bladder out and use it to carry snacks, GU's, Succeed tabs, potato chips, a turkey sandwich, etc. and then just stash my Gatorade along the way. I'll have to ponder that a little. Or a could just carry a big stick and use it to beat up other runners and take their stuff.
