Was running up at Floyd State Park this past weekend and came across something rather unusual...at least to me. While on the ridge after running for about 90 minutes, I looked up and noticed a guy in full camo standing about 5 feet from me holding a shot gun. I was taken back by the encounter to say the least. The "hunter" seemed to be just as surprised to see me as I was to see him. I thanked him for not shooting me, and he just sort of stared at me. It was slightly uncomfortable and comical at the same time. When I mentioned that I'd be headed back that way in about an hour, he mentioned that he'd be long gone and not to worry. Famous last words. I'm pretty sure it isn't any sort of hunting season at the moment, yet when I called the park rangers office, they didn't seem to be too bothered by this, due in large part to the fact that the ridge isn't officially part of the park. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? Is this a strange run in or is it just me?

From the DNR site, looks like Turkey season:
Turkey Statewide: March 22, 2008 - May 15, 2008 Limit: 3 gobblers per season
I was not aware of that.

Note to self: don't wear the feathered headdress when running the trails this weekend. BTW - Thanks for the heads up!

;D Beware of Hunting Season ;D When working in Ohio I would go up to the Mohican 100 mile course to train on the weekends. The first few trips were great , the trails were teriffic. The trail was only about an hour and a half drive, but exactly what I loved. I would awake before daylight and dtive up to be able to start running at Daybreak. On this one particular morning I arrived at daybreak and found six trucks with people sitting in them. Weel, more runners?? I had never seen any before. I got my stuff together and trotted up to the start of the trail where a truck sat. I noticed the driver had a 30-05 rifle. I stopped and knocked on the window. He rolled down the window. I asked was it OK to run on the trails?? The Hunter said it was opening day of DEER season and I best not be running out there. I asked would they shoot at me?? The Hunter said they shoot at everything that moves. Since he had a flack jacket on, I decided to get in my car and go home. He grinned as I left, but I knew he was serious and gave good advice. Trust a Hunter with experience on opening day Was a nice 4 hour drive and I ran the streets in Worthington later.

Turkey season in the spring? I guess you learn something new everyday. It's funny because I actually saw a wild turkey that morning hanging out just outside the park as I was driving in. Had I known they were in season I might have tried to snag some free lunch. ;D
Anyway, thanks for the info all and I'll be sure to break out my hunter orange this weekend.
Happy Hunting.
