Has anyone done this when it was around before? We are looking for suggestions for the sun, heat etc. We were thinking to wear fishing cloths to protect from the sun, sun-poising etc. Anyone have any ideas?

Has anyone done this when it was around before? We are looking for suggestions for the sun, heat etc. We were thinking to wear fishing cloths to protect from the sun, sun-poising etc. Anyone have any ideas? Are you for sure doing this? I was down there last year in July, Key Largo, for a week and was training in that heat. 6-10 mile runs felt like 30. I spent many years in the Florida sun, but man o man, the Keys are freakin' hot and that sun just bears down on you like crazy - no shade at all. Straight, flat grind, down the bike path along the only Highway with the ocean on one side and the gulf on the other... ...but having said all that, after one of my morning runs, I burst into the room and said to my wife, "since our hotel is at the 100 mile mark", "how cool would it be to run south all the way the southern most tip of the continent in Key West!"She just rolled over and told me to stop being so loud and close the blinds... ...but man - that seems like a killer run, through some great keys. plus, how nice it would be to finish the race and mosey on over the square, grab a margarita, and watch the sun set from the southern tip of the content? nice. i'm jealous.

Boy, as a former South-Floridian myself, that sounds like one heck of an event. The fact that it's unsupported is kinda scary...plus, as Christian pointed out, the heat in May is pretty brutal down there.
HOWEVER, it would be an extremely scenic event...and flat!
Crossing the 7-mile bridge would be pretty amazing.

;D For inquiring minds: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon,_Florida ;D The name Marathon dates back to the origin of the Florida East Coast Railroad. The name came about by the railroad workers who were working night and day to complete the railway – due to the unrelenting pace and struggle to complete the project, many of the workers complained that "this [the project] is getting to be a real Marathon", and was later used to name the local station along the railroad.

i ran a similar event in 1993. it was called the Key to Key 100 Mile. it also ran from Key Largo to Key West. it was mostly unsupported, although i think i remember an aid station at 50 miles and 75 miles, otherwise you had to have a crew. in 1993 it was held in December. it started late in the afternoon. i still remember the heat and humidity bringing me to my knees and making me sick as can be (assisted by a 3:35 marathon split). it was very scary running with trucks blasting by right next to you at 70+ miles an hour. i kept thinking if one were to drift over just a bit into the 6-foot wide shoulder i would be fish bait either way. ultimately i dropped at 74 miles after a nap and walking for miles. but Craig wouldn't let me quit until another woman passed me (since i was in 1st until then) so it was a forced march for quite awhile. i don't remember much being enjoyable about the run. since i mostly ran at night i also didn't get to see much. but the drive home wasn't too bad except that it hurt to move!

Thanks for the input everyone, both Jen and i are from Florida and have spent a good bit of time running in the heat and humidity, Jen actually thrives in it most of the time. We have also done a bit of training during the summer in Florida and the islands. Just not this long! We are looking foward to it and are very fortunate to have Jens best friend and her boyfriend crew us- both are doctors. So we are taking a calculated risk to say the least. We will keep the updates going. Lane

We will keep the updates going. Lane Please do. I'd love to know how that goes. Once you get about 30 miles from Key West, it's a different kind of tropical and I remember thinking how cool it would be to be running. As far as aid goes, at least in the early section from Key Largo on down, there's lots of convenient stores --- but then again, there's lots of nutin' too. This run really appeals to me. (both as a beach boy and as a heat masochist that loves H2T)

In case any guts members are running the keys 100, I thought this might be interesting. Its on The History Channel this week.
A spectacular roadway nearly 120 miles long, the Overseas Highway links mainland Florida with the Florida Keys, and contains 51 bridges, including the Seven-Mile Bridge. A boat was the only mode of travel from Miami to Key West until oil tycoon Henry Flagler completed his railroad line in 1912. After a 1935 hurricane destroyed 40 miles of track, the scenic highway was built using Flagler's bridges. A $175-million refurbishment that ended in 1982 resulted in today's remarkable Overseas Highway.

This is another runners perspective on the race for anyone interested in doing the 100, 50, or relay next year. I could not agree with her less, but I also like to play in south florida traffic, it reminds me of being a kid Anita Fromm, 100-Mile Runner I guess there is no easy way to put this, but never in any of the eighteen 100 milers I have finished, or the 37+ 50 milers I have finished have I felt so scared and disappointed as I did at the Keys 100. I have never written a negative letter to an RD before, but being that my crew and I all felt,( amongst others we talked to during the event) that our lives were put at risk, I have to address somethings. First, the website gave NO warning or indication that there was going to be so much traffic. I knew there would be traffic, more than Badwater, but this was awful, dangerous, and scary. Did you happen to research beforehand in any of the Florida Keys visitors guides that there were 3, yes 3, major events held on three different islands that weekend??? The first, as I look over at my guide that was in my motel room, was the Coconut Dolphin Tournament, on Key Largo. The next was the Marathon Super Boat Grand Prix, ( translation: huge trucks towing huge boats on narrow roads and bridges ) and also on the island of Islamorada, there was the Golden Fly Invitational Tarpon Tournament, (transaltion: boats being towed with big noisy trucks on narrow roads). We researched the Keys before we came down there. My husband and I, and our crew, were looking forward to seeing the ocean, and hearing the sound of waves against the shore, and the smell of the fresh sea air. Instead we were subject to a non-stop roar of semis, motorcycles, angry drivers, and and endless barrage of exhaust fumes. Had the website given a more " accurate" picture of where exactly we would be running, I would have never came. So I also, along with MANY other runners I have talked with since, feel misled. If that wasn't bad enough, the final insult was that you did not enforce your rules. It clearly said in the rules that headphones were not permitted, but yet [...] and I both witnessed a runner at the very start with them in. I told her they wern't permitted, BTW. But I, as well as other runners who did respect the rules, noticed lots of runners wearing them during the race, and there were NO course monitors to stop them, as indicated on the website. I guess I don't blame them, who the hell wants to listen to trucks and semis all day long ? But rules save lives and keep people safe, especially on roads with heavy traffic. There were also NO signs anywhere along the course to remind drivers that runners were on the road, or where to run across the lanes.( Roadkill 100 anyone?!) If people can be warned to slow down for a deer, people can be warned with a $2 sign to slow down a little for runners who are there 30 hours out of an entire year.

I am sorry you were not prepared Any research would have given you the story of the KEYS road. Do you also trust your church or preacher to give you the correct answers to the Universe and your place it in??? Your Ultra run along that KEY road, may also be a path you may choose, thinking with an open mind. All those pretty pictures may blur the vision of your mind that you chose not to use. gitagoing does not think blame is your answer as you offer.

Larry, as a runners, we depend on the RD to accurately describe the conditions. It sound like the runners and the RD disagree on the term "relatively wide" used below. Road shoulders are paved and relatively wide in most locations throughout the course, including bridges. So, irrelevant history aside, how was a runner to know the shoulders would be so narrow?

OK sorry i'm out of line. Please forgive me. The US No.1 road is noted for it's traffic to Key West, i assumed everyone knows that fact. But I'm old and forget about the audience, so i'm sorry. Sometimes I assume too much. Please forgive I mean no harm. I offer this as forgiveness. When you wish to run and complete a race or a run, please consider the course, explore the course, it's dangers and benefits. Please consider your preparation and lack thereof to meet the challenge of the course. If the Vogels wish to complain about not finishing a run, try the Death Valley run or the Hardrock, or the Pinhoti 100m( which will be the easiest one), or the MMT trail or Leadville 100m. These runs and races are not for couch designer wanna be's. So don't complain if you can't finish. It's really lucky Bob accepted you into the Key West run. You must know your limitations and abilities. The Keys 100 was never a fun run or will never be!

i guess my warnings were too WEAK about this course, but i did mention that the worst part was the traffic (i ran same race course in 92)
i think a person who made the effort to enter (and i assume train for) this race, make all the arrangements, etc would've done better research as to what the road was going to be like....yes, she said she did, but it couldn't have been much since i knew what i was getting into back into 92 pre-internet
imho - i think this person is a whiner. you should read some of the emails (on ultra list) sent by the RD to all the runners. it REALLY spelled out the risks and issues of the road. and she was really upset they didn't take those other losers headphones away? there were no course monitors around to crack down on headphone users? Travesty!
i mean really. this wasn't your average n'hood 10K. it was a freakin 100 mile race on highway 1 to the Keys. Who could possibly think that would be a decent road to run on?
