I am looking for a pacer for the Umstead 100 miler in Raleigh, NC on April 5-6. I am in no shape to run 100 miles, but I’m gonna try it anyway. I can have a pacer for up to the last 50 miles.
Umstead is 8 loops of 12.5 miles with 1000’ elevation per loop. I hope to get through the first five loops without a pacer, so you would be running/walking 50 or 37.5 miles at a leisurely pace. I hope to do the second 50 miles in around 12 hours, but 14 to 16 hours is probably more likely (that is, if I finish at all). If I do drop out, I’m sure you could hook up with another runner looking for a pacer. I am planning on driving out there on Friday and driving back Sunday or Monday.

Thanks for all the replies .... Seriously, no one wants to run with me in the middle of the night when I am semi-coherent? I really do need a pacer. You don't have to have ever run 100 miles before. Pacing for me would be a great way to see what it's like to run at night and run for 100 miles. I would buy you a race shirt, and maybe even a taco from Taco Bell. Who knows, I may be so out of it that I tell you my PIN to my ATM card while running.

Send me a link to your on-line balance and we'll talk! ;D
Seriously, I was/am thinking about it, but I was letting the experienced pacers have a chance.
Any good intentions aside, I'm probably not sufficiently trained for 37 miles. So if you're willing to accept an iffy 25 miles, I can help.
As I look through the entrant list, I find quite few who I may also be able to pace. Perhaps we can have a loosely organized GUTS pace crew. Naturally, I couldn't pace everyone, but we may be able to match GUTS runners with other GUTS runners and throw me in as a pacer as needed. I remember Sarah said she was 7th on the waiting list, so she will probably be there also.

after a few beers tonight Nils is ready to be your pacer ;D
i think a taco and a t-shirt that reads "I ran 37.5 miles and all i got was this lousy t-shirt and a taco" is all that he would ask for!!! ;D
hope it works out

If you still need a pacer....I have kettle moraine on my schedule in June and any run longer than 30 miles I'm up for. I'm sweeping for Sweetwater 50k again this year on 4/26 but I usually try to get in 2 long runs of 30 a month...let me know if you can find someone.

Absolutely ;D The beer made me start thinking that I should run a 100 miler all by myself rather than just pacing someone else.

All this Umstead talk got me thinking...
I'm going! The race is filled up, so I signed up as a volunteer.
It looks like Max and I have a ride back from Raleigh on Wednesday so we're looking for a ride TO Raleigh Friday night. We'd like to make the Friday night dinner, if possible.
Alternately, I may be able drive, but I won't be returning to Atlanta until Wednesday. Perhaps someone else can offer you a ride back?
I'd be more than happy to share costs for a ride and would expect some contribution towards gas if I drive.

I'll be in the "Pacing Pool" starting 10:00 p.m. Saturday. Max and I still need a ride TO Raleigh on Friday night. We'd like to make the Friday night dinner, if possible. We've already got a ride back from Raleigh, so if I drive up we'll have two cars to return. A super waste of gas (and cash). I'll pay gas on the way...

richcheese,
I am planning on driving up on Friday morning so I can give you and Max a ride. I want to get there at least by 5 so I can check in and hear the pre-race report. Email me at masilva at emory dot com so we don't have to post stuff to the message board that no one else wants to read.
Matt
