As I managed to finish Hellgate (albeit 2+ hours slower than anticipated ), I am now looking to run a 100 miler. As I am not likely to make it off of Umstead's waiting list and I did not get chosen in the Western States lottery (no one from GA did, btw), I am deciding between the Mohican in Ohio (June 21) and Old Dominon (the original) in Virginia (June 7). Any thoughts on which one I should do? I know Janice has run both of them because she has both course records. ;D Mohican looks like more of a trail run with less elevation climb, but the course is not point to point. I also would guess that it would probably be hotter in Ohio than in Virginia, but I would have many more participants to run with at the Mohican. Also, they both would take about the same time to drive to. Anyone else thinking about doing one of these? Matt

Good job at Hellgate! i can't believe you are already planning out your next ultra, not to mention a 100! It must not have been too bad ;D
Thinking about it, the courses have a lot of similarities. both have a fair amount of road. both are more on the "easy" scale of 100 milers, without major mountain climbs, or awful footing (or both), or altitude of any kind. OD 1st 6 miles and last 6 miles are road (you repeat that one section) some road in the middle several sections of single track several big climbs think hot, humid, horseflies (that cover your head!) an "original" 100 Mohican last 15-20 miles are mostly road has a "cloverleaf" loop configuration for middle 50 of race (nice for aid) no major climbs warm, not as humid as VA
Both are low-key (by comparison to other 100s) and have a homey feel. Both give nice buckles. When i won Mohican i got a giant Indian lady carved by chainsaw from a block of wood. I don't know if i can pick one over the other, the are both pretty good. And last i heard neither has the issue of closing out early, lotteries, or other general mania.

i did mohican in 07. great location. there is a nice campground at the race start/finish. the weather was great. 85 degrees, but no humidity. most of the trail is shaded. after heat training in georgia, it felt kind of cold at night. the first and last 10 miles are on pavement/gravel road. most of the trail is very runnable. one small vertical climb around mile 40. support at aid stations was fantastic. i left just one drop bag at covered bridge. you pass through this point several times. there are a few creek and 1 river crossing. nothing deep, but you will get wet. my only gripe was with rd. just didn't seemed organized. didn't have buckles and did not tell anyone this until the awards. the buckle was finally mailed a month later and was quite nice.
