Is anybody else doing the Disney World Marathon on January 13th? (anybody doing the Goofy Challenge?). I'm doing this one with my daughter. (*edit* we are doing the marathon only - not the GC) I haven't booked a hotel yet.
1. Does anybody have a suggestion on cheap hotels? 2. Has anybody ever gotten the "Runner's Retreat" package? Since Disney World is my daughter's favorite place on the planet I was thinking about doing it as a treat for her. But, it is $50 per person. Is it worth it? They are almost sold out so I had better decide fast.
Here is the description on their website:
Are you looking for the ultimate way to experience the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Marathon Weekend? Treat yourself before and after the race with a trip to the Runners' Retreat! By purchasing the Runners' Retreat Package, you will receive exclusive pre and post race access to the Runners' Retreat which will include:
Heated or cooled tent Pre-race hot and cold beverages, fruit and bagels Post-race beverages and snacks Carpeted area for stretching Exclusive baggage check On-site restroom facilities Special character greetings

$50 ?? Geesh, the mouse gets greedier every year! I personally would say no, it's not worth it. And yes, I've run the race (I'm a goofy). There's plenty of stuff to eat/drink after. Didn't use baggage check as I had a crew, so that would have been wasted. Sat in our car before the start until about 30 minutes before the start. Had my preferred breakfast at my preferred time. And believe me we had PLENTY of character greetings the entire way! I'm still kicking myself for not carrying a camera to get pictures with Pooh I'd say spend that $50 on admission to one of the parks instead!

might be worth it if the special character greeting includes a piggy-back ride for a couple of miles
i'd say use the $50 on a good hotel in the park
we stayed in a condo outside the park, but there were a bunch of us splitting the bill. you should definitely check out the park accomodations

Disney is very well organized and unless the special package also includes a later pass for the bus to the start area (last bus leaves at 4AM if you stay on-site) or a bed to catch an extra hour of sleep, I would save the $100 (2x$50) for something else. I have only stayed on-site for the race but it can be tricky not having to book for several nights and everything may sell out. There are many excellent hotels near Disney and I suggest calling and asking if they may have shuttle transport to and from the Disney Marathon. Good luck.

If you start to feel good during an ultra, don't worry you will get over it.

My daughter got mad at me when we walked by the Disney booth at the Marine Corps Marathon. I had not told her about the Goofy Challenge. When she found out she could have gotten three medals in one weekend she slugged me in the shoulder ... hard!
