I've picked this event to be my first 50k - am I foolishly optimistic to think they will let me in based on my limited long distance experience (1 marathon and a handful of half marathon trail runs)?

Thanks for the heads up! I'm on my way to the post office right now!
Rob, I'm sure Janice, Sally or Sarah can answer that question.

Oh, they'll let you in because they want your money and then they'll discourage you from running it!

I did, in fact, mail mine yesterday! BTW - the MM website has some great pics of the course: www.huntsvilletrackclub.org/HTC_Races/MM07WEB/textmap05.htmThe Stone Cut and the Waterfall look very familiar. I think I used to play army around there when I was a kid. BTW - (maybe Janice knows) is the Monte Sano Lodge new? or did they rebuild those old ruins that used to be up there.

Thanks for the input folks - the application is in the mail and hopefully they'll let me in as Sally suggests.
Looking forward to meeting some of you and joining GetGuts soon (waiting 'til Nov).
Have a good Friday!

the lodge is indeed new. not there when i was a kid (for those that don't know i grew up in HSV)
but the cabins up there have been there forever. i recommend renting one for the race (rent now they fill up). i of course don't rent there since the folks still live down the street.....

The cabins are already full. We're on the waiting list, which seems to be a running theme for me these days...

the lodge is indeed new. not there when i was a kid Yep. I talked to my dad about it. When I was a kid one of my favorite things to do on the mountain was to play in the ruins of that old building. Of course as kids we imagined it was the ruins of an old fort. My dad said it was actually an old restaurant and hotel that had burned down and that the "ruins" had been there as long as he could remember. All that was left were the stone walls. I think it is really cool that that they rebuilt it. I wonder if they have "before" pictures in the lobby. I'd love to take a trip down Memory Lane!

FYI - I just phoned this morning and the lodge is full too.
If anyone has recommendations on the next closest place to stay (outside the park), it will be much appreciated. Thank you.

there is a fall GUTS order in my mind right now! we are thinking mid-weight long sleeve shirts w/GUTS logo. No thoughts yet on color, but i have liked the more unusual than plain black or blue. also maybe fleece jackets or sweatshirts? Any votes on 1 vs the other?

Gitagoing votes GUTS caps in pink (f) and bright yellow (m) with a full bear logo on the front and a GET GUTS caption on the back in black.
Or maybe two fighting Bears on hineys facing each other with GUTS in the center on the front.
Maybe our sponsors would buy-in for a space (logo) on the cap, i.e - Big Peach, Accelerate, Etc ......
Just early morning musings.

Fleece jackets would be warm ... uh ... I mean .. cool. But sweatshirts might be cheaper and I wear sweatshirts constantly in the winter. (I'm quite the fashion plate). Of course, a sweatshirt AND a fleece jacket would be nice.
As for colors on GUTS running shirts, any color is fine as long as it is not a color that will cause my daughter to say I look "gay". Actually, most of my running stuff that I wear makes me look gay, according to my 17 year old. I'm not real sure what that means since I can't keep up with the lingo these days. Gay used to mean "happy". Then it meant "homosexual". Now I think she uses it to mean "weird" or "dumb". As when I say, "Amelia, I've got to work the sidelines at the Walton game tonight. Do you want to ride over there together?" and she responds, "Dad, that's gay." See? I'm not real sure what the term means anymore.
Anyway, I think the lime green tie dye look might not pass the 17 year old daughter litmus test. LOL
BTW - you might want to move this discussion to its own thread. Folks that aren't running Mountain Mist might not see it here. And whatever color you pick is fine. I'll take two.
(good idea about the sponsors too. A small Big Peach logo on the side, or back, of a ball cap would look pretty good.)
