Good Day Runners!
Tick, tock...Race day is approaching & the hay is in the barn. I hope everyone is as excited as we are!
I'd like to start by thanking our sponsors. A huge thanks to Big Dog Running Company, Moon Pie, Emergen-C, & Ebony & Ivory BBQ. These great organizations have supported our race and helped make this day possible.
Here are a few items of note:
Directions to the Race
The race will start at the Group Shelter on Lake Delanor Rd. The park gate will open at 6:00 am. F. D. Roosevelt State Park is located just off I-185 near Callaway Gardens, west of Warm Springs, on Ga. Route 190, or south of Pine Mountain off U.S. Hwy. 27.
Parking
• Parking is limited at the start/finish. Please consider carpooling.
• ALL RUNNERS MUST CHECK IN ON SUNDAY MORNING PRIOR TO STARTING THE RACE!
Parking fees
$5.00 parking fee in the State Park including the trailhead parking areas along route 190. This fee is NOT INCLUDED in your entry. There are numerous Self Pay Boxes throughout the park. Georgia Annual State Park passes may be purchased at the park headquarters.
Packet Pick Up
• Saturday, December 1, 4:00 - 6:00 pm, Picnic Shelter #2, next to the Group Shelter (start area). The group shelter has been rented by for another function on Saturday, please do not go into the Group Shelter on Saturday.
• Race day at 6:00 a.m. at the Start/Finish area. The park gates will open at 6:00 am.
• We strongly encourage you to pick up your packets on Saturday to ease race morning confusion.
• ALL RUNNERS MUST CHECK IN ON SUNDAY MORNING PRIOR TO STARTING THE RACE! We need to know who actually starts the race so we know what bodies who to search for later.
Aid Stations / Crew / Cutoffs
• You must complete the course in a 10-1/2 hours (15:45 pace). Cutoffs will be enforced along the way.
• Nine aid stations with water, Gatorade and a wide variety of the standard ultra-fare.
• You are allowed to have a crew, but crew access is allowed only at aid stations. All aid stations are located at the trail head parking lots (Fox Den Cove, Mollyhugger Hill, Dowdell Knob, Rocky Point, TV Tower), or within a very short walk, on Hwy 190.
• CREW VEHICLES MUST HAVE A PARKING PASS!
If you feel you must drop from the race then you must let an official aid station volunteer know that you are leaving. We cannot guarantee quick return to the start/finish, but will eventually get you there.
Drop Bags
Because the parking at aid stations is VERY limited, we're allowing a drop bag at the Dowdell Knob aid station. This is miles 14.3 and mile 28.04. Hopefully this will lessen your need for a crew and will minimize traffic. Please do not put anything breakable in your bags, or anything valuable, as we will not be responsible for the contents. Drop off your drop bags at the start area race morning. They will be brought back after the aid station closes that afternoon. Mark your drop bags with your name!
Flashlight Drop
Because we'll start in the dark and some of you may finish in the dark, we'll have a flashlight drop box at Fox Den Cove, mile 5.9. On the way back that afternoon, you may retrieve your flashlight for the last 5.9 miles. Be sure to put your name on your flashlight. And don't use you pricey hi-tech top-of-the-line light. All flashlights not retrieved on race day will be donated to the volunteers.
The first and last 2 miles of the course are in the deep woods. It'll be dark at the start and, for some, dark at the finish.
Trail Courtesy
The Pine Mountain Trail is heavily used in the fall by Boy Scouts troops, many of which help maintain the trail. This is also the prime season for families as the temperatures cool and the mosquitoes are gone. The trail will be open to all users on race day. Please be courteous when encountering others on the trail! Most importantly, carry out all of your trash. There will be ample opportunities to dispose of any waste at the aid stations. Under no circumstance should any runner leave trash on the trail. Any runner found to be in violation of this will be disqualified and banned from all future GUTS events. Let’s leave the trail cleaner than we found it.
Bandits & Pacers
We have a strict policy regarding pacers. The trails will be congested with registered runners and the everyday folks who enjoy these trails. We DO NOT allow pacers at the PM40. It also should go unsaid, however, it is important to be clear. Bandits are strictly prohibited, hence the name. We have special ways of dealing with bandits that do not include tickle torture.
Complaint Department
Rumor has it, there are some rocks, leaves & pine straw on this course. There might even be a hill or two…but come on, this is South Georgia. How bad can it be? If for any reason you have an issue with the course, an aid station or the fact that the world will end on Dec. 21st – take this up directly with me – the Race Director. Please do not take issue with any of the fine volunteers, who have given up their weekend to come and watch a bunch of knuckleheads run around the woods. Also, keep in mind, if you do bring a complaint to me, I will probably nod my head, smile & tell you that it’s okay.
Proceeds
A portion of the proceeds from the Pine Mountain 40 Mile Run will go to the Pine Mountain Trail Association, the Friends of FDR State Park, and the FDR State Park Search & Rescue Team.
Sincerely,
Thomas Armbruster
