After adding some strength training back into my workouts to get past some nagging knee problems, I was wondering what others on this list may be doing in this realm. What are you guys doing for strength workouts, if any?

16 oz beers instead of 12 oz. Aaaaahhh!!! Her secret revealed!!! I've been thinking about getting back to pumping a little iron, but I just can't seem to find the time.

I posted on this topic on the UltraList, and remember, it's coming from rookie - but I find that iron makes me too beefy and is less helpful to my running.
I have resorted to only bodyweight movements:
pull-ups push-ups dips hanging leg raises and crunches
I feel I am getting stronger where it matters (core, back etc...) and less where it doesn't (chest, biceps etc...)
It was a big shift from vanity lifting to functional lifting.
For legs, well, ever since H2O, I have become a big fan of top of the world ...just not running through 700 spider webs to get there
{grins}
am I the only one heading out there these days?

I bought a used Nordictrack ski machine. www.nordictrack.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product2_12401_10301_22051_-1_19554I've never thought those health club ski machines to be very useful but this thing is really something. I find that it's really hard to 'cheat' and well, I don't know of another popular in-home machine that gives a cardio workout that also provide a resistance workout for the upper body. Just keep turning the crank... your shoulders will start to scream.

- but I find that iron makes me too beefy... I find the only thing that makes me "beefy" is McDonald's Big Mac combo meal every day for lunch along with a big bowl of ice cream every night before bed! I pumped iron for several years at one point, and although I felt stronger, more toned, etc. I never developed what I would call a "beach body". I guess it's just not in my genes. I haven't been out to Sweetwater since the race. I would like to make a trip out there before next year ... IF I had large earth moving equipment with me. Given the time and resources I'm sure I could flatten that place down a little!

Hi everyone,
I am new to GUTS and a slow runner. I have had a number of running injuries including ITB, patellofemoral inflammation etc. I have found that weight training has helped me recover from injuries. I do a gym workout at least twice/wk that includes upper body abs and leg exercise. I pay attention to form and keep the entire session a little aerobic. For legs I have found leg extension one leg at a time (done smoothly), step-ups with a 40 lb dumbbell in each hand (I weigh 215lbs, so adjust accordingly), lunges with 35 lb dumbbells and my favorite new machine. This machine is like the standard elliptical trainer but is set up as a hill climbing machine. You use both full range of motion for legs and arms with level settings from 1 to over 20. So you can customize your effort level. Anyway, doing 2-3 sets of weights with 10 minutes on the climber machine is a really quality workout that improves strength from head to toe. I am still slow as a snail but my fitness has improved. I think the main components to include are range of motion, some free weight, some machines, patience and a sense of humor.
There are a number of good books if you have experience, otherwise work with a trainer or experienced trainer a few times to get your form down.
