Wow! Both of those runs look beautiful! ... and hard. the first has an elevation gain of 8,900 ft and the second one is 5,805 feet. Holy Ground Hamstrings Batman! Where in California are you going to be? I think this month's Trail Runner magazine has a great article about trails near San Fran. (I think it was San Fran - my brain is still in shock from last Saturday ) Maybe you can go run those trails (lots of big climbs) to train for these.

Slw - Enjoy that - itll be fantastic I am sure. If you have not discovered Endurox, get some. It is a powdered recovery drink they sell at GNC or REI. It is good stuff to keep you fueled, provide quick recovery etc. when you are getting in lots of miles or have back to back big runs. I did Oak Mountain 50K then guzzled some and did the ATL marathon next day, without problem or any significant post weekend soreness, and for sure the Endurox contributed big to that. As for elevation training, the best I have found around these parts is the AT. Tray Mountain from Unicoi Gap is good, as is Blood Mountain. The Unicoi/Tray run is really nice: About 11.something miles round trip to the summit and back, with 3 stiff climbs and about 3600 ft. elevation gain. If you go over the top of Tray another 2 miles or so and then turn around (at about the point the trail starts going up again), you will add another 4 miles and 1000 ft. to the thing, for a 15 plus mile run with 4600 ft. Check out www.georgia-atclub.org for maps. Enjoy yourself in California. Matt.

Doh! I was thinking you would be out in California between now and then. If you want to train in Georgia, keep in mind that the highest point in Georgia is Brasstown Bald at 4,784 feet above sea level. If you want a really nice weekend you can take the wife and family to Brasstown Valley Resort. www.brasstownvalley.com/I was there last Thanksgiving and ran some of the trails around the resort. I didn't do the toughest ones but you could definitely get some hill work in there!

;D gitagoing ran that course in the early 2000's ;D It was a 30 mile run from my hotel. I was at Pleasanton CA to do a software load. I just took a few $$ to buy a drink outbound and on the return. My Boss came along and I took him for a short run the day before Mt. Dialbo. I mention that collecting coins was fun to keep your mind occupied while doing long runs. My Boss didn't believe me as I was finding pennies and Quarters on the five mile run. Once he finally figured out how to look he said hey Larry, I found some $$$$. I said see there are lots of coins if you look, what did you find Boss?? I just found a $20 bill!!!!!! Super story. Another believer. My best find is a $$$five. Tomorrow, the reason for this post, gitagoing will be running at 2AM. Don't expect me to find any coins, but you never know. Hopefully I'll git 20 miles in. Just don't show up with lights.

I would like to do all of the races in this series! They are all on the Pacific Crest Trail (west coast version of east coast AT). All are in CA except for 1 in Oregon. I ran Forest Park 50K in Portland, OR. (Yes, there is a HUGE forest in the middle of the city!)
Also, I'm running the Pikes Peak Marathon in August so now I'm using the treadmill 2x week at 11% to 15% grade (speed 4.5 to 5).
Running up and down Stone Mountain is additional training for me.
Good luck and have fun - enjoy the views. It was one of the best trail runs I have experienced. The RDs are very funny.
(I've run on the west coast many times. The only thing I've experienced was at times the breathing was more difficult.)
