I thought I'd ask this group about your experience training for a 100. I'm feeling somewhat discouraged at this point, so I'm wondering what your experience was like. Did you go through a period of doubt before hand? Here's what my training has been like: I ran Mt Mist in Jan, Mt Cheaha in Feb, Bartram trail 25 mile in March, Oak Mt in March. Mixed there, I also ran a couple of other 15-20 mile long runs. Then I got ITB and missed about a month. I May I ran a 20 mile run and the next weekend I ran twisted Ankle. In June I ran a 20 mile run and 10 days later ran Bethel Hill Boogie. I DNF'd at Bethel Hill at 40 miles. I retrospect, I could have kept going at Bethel, but I was going so slowly that I k :'(new I would be in last place and I got discouraged. Also, in addition to the long weekend runs, during the week, I've been averaging about 20 miles, pretty much broken into 3-4 runs. . that's where my discouragement come in. I've been doing a lot (for me) of longer runs, but my times have SUCKED. I've been slower than ever. I have about 9 weeks left until my planned 100. I think I can hit it pretty hard between now and then, If I can get psyched. What do you think? do I have a chance? My only goal is to finish. Let me know what you think.

DNF's: Assuming you're not risking your health, injured or pulled for not meeting a cut-off, there's something to be said for finishing. I'd rather be DFL than DNF. (I've been there.) Mileage: With only three 50K's under my belt I'm certainly not an expert but... Do I understand correctly that you are running 20 miles a week plus your long runs? In other words weekly mileage in the 30 to 40 range? Or is it 20 total weekly miles? When you say that you've been "slower than ever", is it because of the heat? Or have you been over-training? Did you ramp back up after your injury? Answer: If you avoid injury, keep up the mileage without over-training and get plenty of runs on terrain similar to your 100K, I think you can make it. Oh, and consider the advise of any posters who actually have completed a 100K also.

100 miles - dang, I looked for a place where he mentioned k's or miles and missed it in the subject line.
I've heard tales of people doing 100 mile events on 30 to 40 miles a week training. Isn't 30 to 40 miles a week considered kinda' low mileage?
Waiting to hear more from either Joe or our 100 mile event experts...

I've been averaging closer to 45 mpw for the past several weeks. I plan to run 60 this week, and get my average up to 55 for the next 5 weeks. I will culminate at H2T 3 weeks before Lean Horse, then taper. Have others been successfull with this kind of mileage?

That kind of mileage should be fine for Lean Horse. If we can get the airline ticket thing figured out Jim and I are planning on running Lean Horse too.
Keep in touch!

I just wanted to give an update about my race. I made it to 88 miles in 24 1/2 hours before I ran out of gas. I realize now that I quit eating at about 70 miles, and just couldn't recover from that. I've set my sights on Umstead. Live and learn.

I'm going to do someting this weekend coming up. I'd like to do at least 20. Are you up for that? also, I'm doing FA. Hope to see you soon.

I'm wanting to start training for a 98k in Vancouver and a then a 100 miler but I cant find any books with training schedules in them. Does anyone have any suggestions? I run a minimum of 29 miles one week and 40 to 50 every other. I ran the mardis gras marathon in just under 4 hours in feb and the ING half in ATL in 1.44.23 so I think im getting into the right shape for this kind of thing but im affraid of overtraining and rapid increase injuries which i feal i am very suseptable to. Any idea?
