Hey guys. Has anyone run any ultras in SC? I am looking at doing the Long Cane 50k in May and I was just wondering what the terrain is going to be like. I train for the most part at Pine Mtn. Thanks for any help.

I finished the Long Cane 55 Mile last year as my first attempt at a 50+ miler. If you do most of your training at Pine Mountain, then you'll be pleasantly surprised how much easier the terrain at Long Cane is. Long Cane is a horse trail, but there are only a handful of areas with that muddy horse-trampled terrain (at least there were only a few last September). The course doesn't have the constant ankle-twisting rocks that Pine Mountain does and it's fairly flat with several miles of easy forest road. Here's my report from the race last year: bestpacescenario.blogspot.com/2010/09/long-cane-50-mile-9510-race-report.html

I also ran the Long Cane race last year. It is pretty low key and the distances listed are estimates to say the least. The aid stations are well stocked, and everyone is very supportive. Be sure and pay attention to the course directions and descriptions as there are some tricky parts.

All of Terri Hayes races are low key, that's why I love them so much! Long Cane is actually 55 miles (some last year thought it was closer to 57) so you need to be prepared to be out there a long time and have a headlamp with you - it took me close to 15 hours last year. It was hot and muggy that day...the trails are good for the most part but there are quite a few ups and downs so you're getting a lot more elevation change than yuo might expect for that part of SC. I'll be there again this year charles
