Jason, Congratulations and I really enjoyed reading your report. As a very novice trail runner, it's verycool to get some perspective on how you'd run your first ultras. Thanks!
And what's your final verdict on the frequency of S-caps and gels?

Patrick, I have to take more than most, because I sweat heavily and because I'm a super-sized ultrarunner.
Still, I overdid the sodium this time around. I was going for 2 S-caps an hour and gunning for 1,000 mg sodium an hour, but I didn't take into account some of the aid station food that I ate (sodium-heavy chips, etc.). I also didn't taken enough water during miles 32-47, when I was doing my fastest running and most frequent running.
During past races, I've suffered from not consuming enough food and electrolytes. This time around, I probably over-corrected. I was feeling great for most of the race as far as energy goes, but I didn't drink enough during the last third of the ultra to balance it out.
I posted on the Ultra mailing list about my condition and the general consensus seems to be that I didn't put myself in as serious danger as I was afraid of at the time, but that I need to keep my bladder relatively full during the last half of a race, to minimize the internal rubbing. I was back to normal a few hours after the race, but I didn't know what was going on at the time.
