Hey guys, for those of you that like reading about those really whacko ultra runners ... as opposed to us relatively normal ultra runners ... is there such a thing as a "normal" ultra runner? ... Here is a great event to check out: The 4 DesertsThe 4 Deserts is a series of seven-day, 250-kilometer footraces across the world’s largest and most forbidding deserts. The races are: Atacama Crossing in Chile (March 30, 2008); Gobi March in China (June 8, 2008); Sahara Race in Egypt (October 26, 2008); and The Last Desert in Antarctica (November 16, 2008). This year three competitors will be attempting to be the first to complete the 4 Deserts in one calendar year: South African Paul H. Liebenberg, Dane Jimmi Olsen, and American Dean Karnazes. Right now they are running the first leg, the Atacama Crossing. There are 73 people competing from 21 countries. You can follow their progress on the following website, which also has links to various blogs by the competitors: www.4deserts.com/atacamacrossing/

The FIRST race of four. 36 minutes ahead of nearest person after almost 32 hours running. Yep. This was the Chile leg of the four. I guess you could say it was "come from behind" win. Karnazes won on the first and third days but had really struggled on Day 4 and had fallen about 30 minutes behind. Dean finished the 5th leg about an hour faster than the guy that came in second for the event, to build the winning margin for the overall event. The 6th day of the event was only a 10K run, so the 36 minute lead was insurmountable, barring disaster. In fact, the top three runners ran together the last day and crossed the finish line together.

I love that - the Dean bashers really get on my nerves and I am happy to see the dude win. I don't care if he wants to brag and embellish into the 22nd century, he's doing a lot of good for the sport and for those in need and I respect that. ...some of us (er, me) would not have been exposed to the sport when I was if it wasn't for the Ultra Marathon Man book. I'm not ashamed of that. I'm happy to be here... sorry, off my soap box.
