I am reading Born to Run right now. I am thinking about getting the Vibram Five Finger this weekend. (REI sale through Monday!) Which type is the best for running? I was thinking classic or sprint.
Thanks to all who wear these unique "shoes".

The new model, the Bikila, is designed specially for running. Don't know if REI has them yet. Otherwise a lot of people like the KSO.

If you are planning on wearing them to run the trails at Kennesaw Mtn .... make sure your insurance covers broken toes.

Two of my friends just recently got into the Five Finger craze and I almost bought a pair until I tried on my friend's KSOs and went for a quick run. My feet fell the same way that they do in my normal gait so I opted out of buying them. I get what Born to Run was trying to sell, but running some of the more technical stuff (sharp rocks, gravel fire roads, and what not) makes me happy to have that rock shield in the Cascadia is under my feet.

The New Balance MT 100 is a good option for those looking for a minimalist shoe that still provides adequate rock shield protection. I have a pair that I occasionally wear for short distance trail runs.
I'm thinking about buying a pair of Vibrams, but just for walking around during the day for errands and not for running.

There were a couple guys running the Scenic City Trail Marathon in VFFs. If I tried that I would have a broken toe too. I like Inov-8 for trails.

I would go with KSO's or maybe Sprints. Try each on as they are sized a little differently. Classics might be tough for running but I don't have them so I really don't know.
Despite Spurgeon's warning you probably won't break any toes at Kennesaw. :-) If you are planning on running in the VFF's please transition slowly - muscles, tendons, ligament and bones all need time to adapt.
FWIW i have worn nothing but Five Fingers (and more recently barefoot and homemade huaraches) for the past 8 or 9 months. This is for running, work and general life - including running at Kennesaw, the AT, etc. I've also been running at least some miles with VFF's for almost 3 years now.
Josh (who still doesn't think "barefoot" running was real shocking revelation in BTR)

I believe Spurgeon has a valid point....in fact ask the author of BTR as he was the one who broke his toe when he went for a group run with the GUTS group!

Still doesn't change my opinion. Just so you know McDougall has broken toes twice since writing BTR. Like I said if you want to run in VFF's take it slow, it takes time to transition - much longer than most people think. If you just want to walk around with gorilla feet - that's easy any black pair of KSO's will do. :-) Josh

I have the KSOs and like them. I agree with odog on the slow transition. I stretched my first run in the Vibrams too far, and I could hardly walk for two days afterward because the tendons and muscles in my legs were so damned sore. However, once I eased off that distance a little and continued with a more methodical progession, the Vibrams have been good to me.
Anecdotally, they have also helped in that when I run with Vibrams, I do not have a sore left knee. Whereas, when I run in regular shoes, I wear a band on that same knee and invariably, it gets sore after running the same distance.
I have yet to go off road in the Vibrams, but hope to do so soon (starting with a well worn trail, before venturing to something a little more technical).
You should give the Vibrams a try!

Thanks to everyone for all the input. I decided to get the Classics last weekend at REI. I went to just try them on to see if I was a candidate. They had Classics in my size so I decided to get them.
I have been wearing them all around but not running yet. Basically because I had arthroscopic surgury last Thursday so I am not suppose to run yet. I have placed an order for the "running shoes" Bikila (back order, of course).

I wear KSO's for running, but I also have 2 pairs of classics for just messing around in and a pair of KSO/Treks that I use on trail runs. These are all when I am not barefoot of course. I thought about the Bilka's, but they are just too bulky for me.
P.S. I have never broken a toe :-)
P.S.S. I have also tried several other minimal shoes, Vivo Barefoot EVOs, Feelmax, Run-A-Moc, etc. and I always come back to my KSOs.

I wear my KSOs for short trail runs and they're awesome! I wear them just casually as well. They have lasted me almost 8 months now, I just stick them in the wash when they need it. However, I still get blisters from them sometimes. I suggest them to everyone who asked me about them!
