Hey there my name is Matt and I just moved to ATL from Durango, CO. I know I know, but can the flogging wait? Anyways I am not having any luck finding any unpaved non-intermittent trails around ATL. I live in the NE section by Piedmont and I-85. Anyone have the downlow on the whereabouts of these trails. There has to be some good ones due to the geography of the region. Hope to hear from ya soon!

Welcome to Atlanta Matt! If you are looking for in-town weekday running I would suggest Kennesaw Mountain (16 mile loop), Stone Mountain (approx 5.5 around the mountain on trails, plus another 1 up to the top), Red Top State Park, or the Chattahoochee (I don't run there often, but Sope creek is pretty popular with the GUTS crew). For long weekend runs, the world is your oyster in the North GA mountains - Coosa backcountry, AT section runs, the Pinhoti, Benton MacKaye, Fort Mtn, Blood Mtn, the list is quite long. If you want to go south, there is Pine Mtn at FDR state park (20+ miles point-to-point of rocky technical trail), Providence Canyon.
If you aren't already a member, you should join GUTS. Organized weekend long runs every month or so, club-sponsored races, plus somebody is always trying to get an informal group together for some crazy weekend run. At $15 per year, t is the best deal in Atlanta, hands down!

Hey Amanda thanks for the help! Wow this looks like a great list to start with! I'm still wondering what you people do during the week say before or after work when you only have an hour or so to run. Looking for a 10K or so to run daily in the city. Thanks again for your help!

Welcome to Atlanta, Matt. Every Tuesday at 6:15, GUTS members meet at Kennesaw Mountain at the Visitor Center for a run on the KM trails. It's not always easy to get out there from town, but you will meet a lot of other trail runners and hear a lot of info about where/when other folks run trails during the work week, etc. As far as trails close to town, I'm guessing that the Chattahoochee trails are your best bet. www.nps.gov/chat/planyourvisit/unitdirections.htmTake care --KPP

Glad to add another trail runner to our local scene Matt! As you can see there are quite a few options to choose from...close to home or mountain adventures on the AT or other trails, easy to HARD, and a variety of running surfaces...and if you want partners to run with you'll find them!
Happy trails, Charles

Hey guys thank you so much for the help! Have been running at Stone Mountain and it's been great. The cherokee trail is pretty chill and a good distance. The trail to the top adds a good anarobic element to the mix. Looking forward to running at all the other locations as mentioned above. You all take care and again thanks for the help!
Best Wishes,
Matt

Hey Guts fans just wanted to say thanks again for the trail resources. I've been running a lot at Stone Mountain and KM. Fun trails! Went to Km today and performed much better than the first time. Decided to go over the two mountains and then come back the same way. Much more tuff than the loop. Forgot how long the section was leading down the west side to the road till my legs started screaming. Saw a couple of runners. One blonde with a blinding pink shirt and a choc lab hitting it hard and looking strong, but haven't seen any runners the past few times I've been out there. Same goes for SM. Guess everyone is out playing further than I'm allowed. Oh well look forward to meeting some of you guys and gals.
Take Care,
Matt

Matt, glad to hear you are enjoying Stone Mountain. I'm out there several times per week with my brindle hound dog. I also haven't seen many runners out there lately, but I do say hi to everyone I cross paths with so maybe I'll run into you one of these days.

I think the heat is scaring a few folks off. Y'all should join us for a run at Sope Creek tomorrow morning. We are starting at 7 from the Sope Creek parking lot.
