I seek the board's feedback/recommendations on a good "starter" 50 mile or 100km trail run in the Southeast (say no more than 5-7 hr drive from ATL). My ideal is to begin building the endurance so that I am ready to run in the October-Feb/March 2011 time frame.
I have a few possibilities on the radar, including:
Pine Mtn (I know it's 40, but hey, it's GUTS) Lookout Mtn in Chattanooga, and IronHorse in FL
Is there a "must" that I am missing?
Thank you in advance for your feedback and insight. Cheers!
Rob

Hey Rob,
I can vouch for the Lookout Mtn 50m (looks like it will be 50m instead of 100k from now on). It was my first 50m and I highly recommend it - it does have pretty good elevation change so just make sure you're prepared for that.

Thank you for the feedback Dan & Charles.
As a FYI, you're correct that Lookout Mtn is going to max out at 50miles this December (which sounds like a great challenge for me... especially with the 'heads up' about the elevation). Below is a portion of the response I received from the Lookout Mtn race director:
The race will not include the 100k this year. Due to two years of significant logistical challenges and safety issues brought on by weather we have decided to permanently change the December race to a 50 miler. We are considering adding a 100k on the same course in Spring 2011.

Flat Rock Park in Columbus has 6-8 miles of single track trails. There is some mtn biking trails north of Phenix City...but I have not tried running on those. The local bike club (The Bike Shop) may be able to point out the trails they use. For quick short trail runs on Ft Benning; there is the Ranger trail and the fitness trail. I think there is some trails over at the Uchee Creek Rec area but I have not checked them out. It would be great to use some of the training areas on Ft Benning but they are not intended for trail running You also can go south to Providence Canyon (30 mins) that has a nice 7 mile loop and some interesting canyon features. I think Scott S runs that trail loop from time to time. Also there is a AL state park near Auburn that has trails. (The entry fees into the AL parks are a bit pricey so I usually skip those) Oh, and lest I forget...if you are on the AL side of the Hooch, the Pinhoti trail is only a couple hours north on 280...great trails up there! I can't recommend it exactly, but I am running the Cheat Mt Moonshine Madness 50 miler on August 27 - 28. Starts Friday night instead of Saturday morning. Works much better for my schedule! Will be my first 50 miler. Good luck with yours!
