I wont say I never whined or complained about a race organization, but I will say that I have not done so since I started volunteering at races. If you cannot appreciate someone getting up on a cold rainy Thanksgiving morning and stand on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to hand out a cup of water to a stranger and then pick the empty cup up and throw it in the trash afterward, then one deserves to be sentenced to become race director.

It's really sad that some people aren't more appreciative of the time and energy the RDs and other volunteers selflessly put into these events so we all can enjoy them. I'd have to think this is the exception to the rule - in 23+ years participating in races of all types and lengths I've never really witnessed that kind of behavior. And the ultra/trail events have been among the best in that regard...so supportive and upbeat (no whining or complaining)! But there are always some bad apples out there who always feel the need to complain - I'd like to think that their bad karma will bite them back at some point.
Thanks for posting this Greta...

Such a shame. So much has changed in the last 5 years. I miss the days when you had to actually do the race in order to get a T-shirt. I will not wear a shirt from a race (or event) if I was not able to do the event.
To me, the Boston Marathon is the "Olympics" of running. It meant you had to actually qualify in order to run Boston. Kind of like the Olympics. What would happen if they opened up the Olympics to anyone who could pay a certain amount of money to participate!?
Seems appropriate to mention that since today begins the Opening Ceremonies?!

Definitely a shame...unfortunately as Ultrarunnign gains popularity this will occur more often.
I am from NM originally and Susan is awesome. I do not question her one bit on her decision to run the race by invite only form now on. I think moves like this will definitely put a "reality check" on the entitlement attitudes that are out there.
I am very happy she invited me to run it as well...lol. Now to figure out WHEN!!!
