Anyone planning on running The North Face Endurance Challenge 50-mile race in Washington, DC? Or did anyone run it last year? It's on my short-list of races for this year but the cap is at 200 and it's filling up fast. www2.thenorthface.com/endurancechallenge/index.html

I ran this last year! it was my 50 mile PR. 14th place 8:19
let me tell you everything about this race I liked and didnt like.
course was very nice. elevation change is really minimal. its an out and back course. you run out about 14 miles and then complete 3 loops. only 1 loop for the 50k. the race starts are staggered for the 50 mile and 50k. 50 mile starts in th3e dark. its really nice and has alot of folks there cheering on!
the 3 loops consist of 2 steep climbs. short but steep. they are runnable but I opted not to run these until 3rd loop. you are running parallel with the Potomac river, which is very beautiful, for about 1/2 or more of the race.
things to note. this past year the race wwas mid septemeber and I do not recall heat being an issue at all infact i believe the srat was kind of chilly. this year its mid july. Id do it agian because I think tis the perfect PR course ...but i have another race then.
the only thing I did not like about the race was the fact that they ran out of nuun. (which my dumbself didnt bring S caps) and they had mainly GU and chips. I need more than that. at your drop bag I recommend you leave something with some calories!
I have to say that I have signed up for 2 other north face ultras this year. North face Australia 100km and ultra tour du mont blanc CCC 98Km I am extremely happy at what North Face is doing promoting these events to bring new runners to Ultra running!
as expensive as the races are....Know they are completely worth it due to the amount you get for it. lots of free northface stuff in your goodie bag like free running shorts, shirt etc. as well as all you can get food after and I got to meet Dean Karnazes!
I hope this helps. agian I highly recommend this race as a first time 50 mile or a 500th. very fast course.
run like hell! Sean >26.2
on a side note. I saved a bunch of $ on a hotel because I used priceline.com and betterbidding.com and bid on a cheap hotel in sterling Va which is like 5 mins from race start. I stayed in a hilton for about $45 for the night

Thanks Sean. I think I'm definitely going to run it.
Nice job on Sunday. I'm sure McDonalds was proud.

On the last page of the May 2010 TrailRunner magazine, there is an advertisement for The North Face Endurance Challenge that lists Atlanta, GA as an event host on 10/16-10/17. Apparently, Bellingham, WA had some logistical issues and got canceled.
I have been unable to confirm this news (or determine the venue) just yet but it must be pretty solid to have made it into a print advertisement.

I called and left a message at the # that is listed on the site. If they do hold an event here, I'm going to see about see about transferring down to this race. The site says you can transfer as long as space as available.

After sending an e-mail today, I received this response from The North Face Endurance Challenge. "This information will not officially be released until April 1st. The magazine is correct though and more information is forthcoming. See you there!" I hope this is not some April Fool's joke.

Sean is right. I talked to the rep from TNF yesterday and it's definitely at Pine Mtn. She even mentioned that there was another 40-mile race around the same time. I was going to transfer to this race, but I'm going to stick with DC.

I signed up for the 50 M. The registration price is steep ($90 + service charge and I'm glad I used an AT&T rebate card), but it sounds like a fun time.
The 50 M starts at 5:00 AM, 50K at 7:00 AM, and marathon at 9:00 AM, so it's good to see the starts for each race staggered.

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if they did a site visit? After this event they (GA Parks) may never let anyone hold a race there again.

The race info specifies that the start/finish will be at the Liberty Pool area. I'm not sure if there are more parking accommodations at Liberty Pool than there are at the Group Shelter, though.

Anyone need a room for DC. I'm running the GA race now and I didn't realize my room was pre-paid so I can't get a refund. I sell it for $50. It's at the Hilton Garden Inn in Tyson Corner for Friday, June 4.
If you are interested, email me: matthewgrund@mac.com.
