Greetings Group.
I was wondering if GUTS has ever considered a 24-hour event?
With all the hundreds coming up in the fall, I'm sure there would be great interest from local runners looking to night-train.
ATY filled up like crazy, and that course is arguably pretty boring.
I realize it's a short loop, but the Hot to Trot loop is pretty low-key and could be a good spot - but y'all know waaaaay more about venue and all that more than me.
I just want to run one - a trail one - as practice and a glimpse into the world of 100s.
I don't think I'm alone in that...
Thoughts? Am I crazy?

good idea. if you include a relay, even more people will sign up and it could be a pretty good revenue draw for the club. short loops are scary though - easy to quit when you run by 'home' every half hour.... There is a good 7 plus mile trial loop in Athens area - if this takes hold, I volunteer to cooridnate with Oconee County to get access and make arrangements with them for the event. They hold a 24 hour mountain bike race every summer, and it is the site of a xterra series trail 10K every november. Real trail running for sure. Heritage Park is the name.

it's possible....i would need someone to volunteer for the RD position
this is an open call! of course i do check references....
anyway, yes, it would be a cool event. i don't think H2T course would be a good choice as it would be too dark during the night. i have a few other options but have never spent time looking into it because i already rd a couple of our events
but with no more SCUR and 2008 SH2O not being a GUTS event (Johnny's DCRR club will be the sole club managing the event next year) we should have more ability to put on some new events. we are also looking at races at red top mtn and fort mtn
stay posted j

I volunteer to RD at the Athens trail - I know the peoples in charge and the course options. Mike C at Big Peach ran the xterra last year Janice, so he can offer you a second opinion on the course. I have been thinking of putting on an event there for a while, and I really think this would be fun. What are your thoughts on a date range for something like this? Matt mjkarzen@bellsouth.net.

Everything fills up fast now. Umstead filled in just 3 or 4 days thanks to that d@med active.com (I'm one of the first on the waiting list, so keep your fingers crossed). You almost have to hold an event in secret to give folks time to register Christian, if you have location suggestions for a 24 hour, please share! That's been the third hardest part about putting one one...the first being getting enough volunteers for a 24 hour, followed closely by the need for an accurate counting system. My reason for starting Hot To Trot was to eventually turn it into a 24 hour. But I think we'd need to find private property on which to do it, like ATY does. I have a great place in Mississippi, but I don't think that's in Georgia

What's ATY?
I don't even think I got on the waiting list.
As far as a date is concerned, I would think some time in the fall. It seems to me that there are a lot more "local" (within 5 hours driving) races in the spring than in the fall.
Spring: Fat Ass Mtn. Mist Uwharrie Black Mtn. Cheaha Mt. Mitchell Mississippi 50 Some other 50K in AL I can't recall Bartram 21 mile Umstead Sweet H20 Twisted Ankle
Fall: StumpJump Dupont Forest Marathon Pumpkin Butt Dizzy 50s
I think adding a long (50 miles+ or 12 hrs+) race in the fall would be great. Whatever happened to the Pine Mtn. Race? Would that be a possible location?

What about Roswell Area Park for a 24 hour event? It is a 5K lighted course. Probably would need permission from the park officials.

Charlie, neat idea, but I don't think it's "trail running" enough, but maybe I am thinking of a different trail. That's one thing that turns me off from the ATY. Man, I'm stoked that we are talking about it though --- what a great event it would be. I like the idea of Athens as it seems like a spot that would be more 'trail-runner' friendly since they already hold a event there as it is... ...plus, hippy, town an' all. {wink} What abut some of the river trails along the chattahoochee? There's a bunch of 'em on Norcross and Alpharetta... but they tend to be rather short like H2T

A small local business ran a 50/100 mi bike race/event at Bull Mountain a month ago. There are many loops and a good mix of single track and forest service roads for accessibility. Though it would be a bit of climbing. 55nineperformance.com/100.htmlHaving not run over 6 hrs yet, I'm no where near ready to run one but would love to help out with it. Why would it be better to be private? The state parks seem like a good venue. Georgia Horse Park and the Fort Yargo both host 12/24 hr mtn bike events. grannygear.com/Races/Conyers/index.shtmlwww.dirtyspokes.com/

the rangers don't take too kindly to people running at night and have come after me before. luckily i can run faster than them and am willing to go places they aren't

This sounds like fun - particularly any potential relay aspect (can you tell I havent run more than 6hrs yet?). Another venue suggestion (which may include some degree of lighting) would be inquiring with some of the larger high schools in and around Atlanta , particularly in the Northern 'burbs, which have cross country trails of 2-3 miles.

Marist has a nice course. Mercer University does too. I'll try to think of some others. Assuming it all gets worked out with administrations, doing it at a school would have some nice facilities and could maybe pull volunteers from there?
And since I won't quite be up to running a 24-hour for a little bit now, I'll go ahead and throw in for volunteering for sure.

When I was a worker bee , I would run at Hembree Park during my lunch hour. The park has an excellent trail varied terrain. As I would circle the course I visioned this would be an ideal location for an 6-8-12-24 hour run. The park is always looking to serve the community with new activities. Included below is some information on the park. Hembree Park Phone: 770-569-9746 Joe Glover, Director of Recreation and Parks Phone (770) 641-3705 Fax (770) 641-3841 gawponline.org/pdf/RoswellHembreePark.pdfwikimapia.org/1036960/I don't remember exactly how long the trail is, somewhere around 1.5 miles I believe. The above info has an aerial view showing the trail around the baseball fields. A GUTS 24 hour would be fantastic.

I hope the idea doesn't lose steam - there seems to be a lot of interest.
I wish I wasn't such a noob and knew more about helping out with these type things, but if someone tasks me with sumin' - I can get it done.
Just throwin' my "willingness to help" hat in the ring - for whatever that's worth. {wink}
P.S. I am 30 days away from MMTR and scared shitless. any words of wisdom are well heeded.

I am 30 days away from MMTR and scared shitless. any words of wisdom are well heeded. 1. Don't take any wooden nickels. 2. Don't try to keep up with Sally. 3. 50 miles is a long way. 4. Walk the hills. 5. Don't get depressed when girls pass you, even the "old" ones. 6. Hydration and proper fueling are your friends. 7. Intestinal problems and nipple chaffing are not your friends. 8. Remember DLF > DNF >> DNS (Dead Last Finish is greater than Did Not Finish, which far exceeds Did Not Start.) 9. If When you get lost remember that moss grows on the north side of a tree. 10. Completion of a 50 mile run in under 11 hours qualifies you for Western States, and to be the RD of a GUTS 24 hour event.

slight correction to #10
No restriction on 50 mile times to be a GUTS RD!

we are in the process of talking to several area locations that would allow us to hold a 24 hour event. i think we will find one if we keep trying. there are some variables as to the type of course, etc
still need an RD. i promise i would help.
we are thinking about holding in the nov - dec time frame in 2008
