I ran the red top rumble route...kinda...today. I needed to get in twelve or so miles for my marathon taper (Chickamauga 11/8) and decided that my new trail runners needed more miles before Mystery Mtn 12 miler on Sunday.
I could not remember the trail between the campground and Iron hills trail so I stuck to the road. It was late and I did not want to find my way in the dark.
I also ran the homestead loop and sweet gum trails in reverse from the race. Will next year's route be exactly the same as last year?
I know they thinned out the deer a few years back. They might think about the squirrels. I no sooner parked and a gray squirrel hit me up for pocket change! Talk about bold!
Anyway, the cooler weather meant I had the trails pretty much to myself.

The 11.5 mile course will be the same again. This past year, GUTS volunteers created a makeshift trail through the woods to connect Iron Hill to the Campground/Visitor Center. We used flags & tape to lead the runners through the woods.
After going around the Iron Hill trail, there will be an area on your left about 200 m before the end of the loop. You should see 2 tree stumps that look like a makeshift entrance (there is a trail on your right). When you enter the woods, stay a bit to the right and then it will veer left.
For the 2009 event, we'll have volunteers out there to clear a makeshift trail again. When you run through the woods, it follows a firebreak after you cross over the creek. Hope that helps!

Question: regarding the youth trail run component, is there any input on the length of that run? I have two young daughters that want to participate and I am trying to guage how long the run will be (and whether Dad may also be able to do the 11.5mi run).
Thank you.

Hi John! Welcome to GUTS! My wife and I ran the same route 2 weekends ago and ran into the same difficulty. We were not sure where the trail was that connects Iron Hill to Homestead. Maybe we can find out from Sarah this weekend. Anyway,...welcome! Looking forward to meeting you this weekend!! ;D Patrick If you guys are still interested in finding the path I can show you!!

Like Janice posted, the Kids Trail Trot will be around half mile. We'll be confirming the exact distance soon and I'll post it for everyone.

The Map My Run link is the Red Top Rumble course. The hills are pretty mild out there. You hit the longest climbs on the back end of the Homestead Loop otherwise it's a pretty fast course.

Question for Janice & Jaydene:
I fall into the "late bird" category and unfortunately missed the race registration, however - can I still bring my children up to participate in the youth run? If so, please let me know whether there's any required registration for them. Thank you.

If so, please let me know whether there's any required registration for them. Thank you. yes, the kids race is still open. i am sure that Jaydene would prefer that you sign them up ahead of time. You can do so on active or send in a form. It is $5 per child. We will have finishers awards for them, thus the cost and we have to get your signature of course for them to be able to run!

If you need a copy of the form to mail in the Kids Trail Trot entry, e-mail me at RedTopRumble@GetGuts.com and I'll send it to you. Otherwise, you can also register on Active with the processing fee.
Thanks! Jaydene, RTR RD
