Loved the race report! And thanks for the strokes! Jamie and his wife Wendy won overall! I have not seen any results posted yet.

Jamie and his wife Wendy won overall! Right, ...and so did you. Controversy and all.

... and his wife Wendy won overall! I'm thinking she wishes she had never met me. Or at least not in the manner in which she did.

If you saved my email account of my "report" feel free to post it here. In the immortal words of Rhett Butler, in the aptly named book, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."

Surfy,
GREAT race report! Maybe I'll shoot for Cheaha next year. Sad reality is that the weather probably won't be any nicer than it was this year.

Great report. This year was my first for the Cheaha 50K. Met some new GUTS members. Other than the transport bus hitting my car, I thought the entire event was very well organized. The Lodge on top of Cheaha was a beautiful structure - pre-race dinner was very good. Nice bus ride, talking with Wesley and Evelyn. There were many exceptional athletes there. I met one 67 year-old lady plugging away, though very concerned about falling. Saw one older guy who had fallen and was pretty beat up - he had to drop out somewhere in the middle. The race itself was difficult, plenty of miles with treacherous leaf-hidden rocky areas - lots and lots of up. The stream crossing was cold, and may have actually helped my calves some. One guy named Bryan said he slipped and fell in there up to his chest! There was a group of folks about my speed who played leap frog with me for a good part of the run. That was enjoyable. Everyone was encouraging to each other - just what I've come to expect at these events. Spoke with a guy named Mike, I believe, who had some intestinal difficulties, but managed to summon up the strength to blast it out after the last aid station and hit the mountain hard. The Cheaha Mountain climb was crazy, but knowing the end was near made it tolerable. The day was cloudy and the air had a bite to it - which really made for perfect running conditions, as long as you kept moving. It would have been nice to have a view from the top, but the fog was pea-soup thick nearly the entire time. Swag was great, Aid Stations well-equipped. Good folks. I was glad to finish - fairly slow - but in one solid piece. Todd Henderson, race organizer, gets a big thumbs-up. Now for knee surgery Wednesday, and hopefully a speedy recovery.

we would love to give a little air time to your story ;D Ok, putting on my detective cap... I don't know Janice that well, but "air time" does not seem like something she'd say ...it more so sounds like a sort of play on words. dude, did you blow ass on the trail only to realize there was a pretty woman running behind you? ...or am I waaaay off?

....dude, did you blow ass on the trail only to realize there was a pretty woman running behind you? Let's just say that the guy named Mike, that kraaken met, wasn't the only one to "blast it out after the last aid station".

Finish times have been posted: mountcheaha50k.org/results2008.htmlAnd dangit, that dang Blue Hell just killed me. Big mistake not eating that last Moon Pie. I could have used the energy. I was about three steps behind Rob Cowan when we passed the sign at the bottom of the hill. He missed that final return to the trail and ran to the end of the circle (probably adding a quarter of a mile) and still beat me to the finish by eight minutes eleven seconds. Wendi Dial passed me halfway up the big climb and beat me to the finish line by seven minutes fifty-three seconds. And Robert Pless didn't pass me until the final little piece of trail and still beat me by 50 seconds. Maybe I need to run longer on the weekends. Or maybe I need to run more hills. Or ... hmmm .... heck with that! I'll just be happy I crossed the finish line in an upright position and still breathing! Doh!!!! BTW - I just noticed that Sally got overlooked AGAIN! I got "chicked" by Blue Ridge Masters in Ultrarunning Magazine ... and now Sally has been "Guy-ed" (or would that be "duded") by the Mt. Cheaha results.

Quick update for anyone interested. Sylacauga Parks and Rec is handling the damage done to my car by the transport bus. Thumbs up for them handling the situation in a courteous and timely manner.
My knee surgery was 2 weeks ago - Dr. Gupta with Peachtree Orthopedic Group smoothed the underside of my kneecap, cleared out some inflammed areas, and cut out the slightly torn meniscus. I had some significant swelling and fluid on knee, and on Tuesday, he removed a good bit of that fluid. What a relief. The tightness was reduced significantly. Yesterday was my first day of rehab - I biked 13 miles on the Big Creek Greenway. Felt pretty good, but weak. I am looking forward to joining you all on the trails again as soon as I get strong. It is tough not running at this time of year, but at least I'm starting to move again!
