After a year of moving from a road marathoner (with a few trail marathons) to deciding to try the 50K distance, I have decided to try my 1st 50 Miler this October (the NorthFace 50M @ Pine Mountain). I'm looking for any tips for me to advance my training for this longer distance. I've done 3 50K'ish distances (actually two 50K's and covered 33+ at the '10 Hot 2 Trot) but my additional training for these has been to add about 10 miles to my weekly mileage and to move my 3 hour long runs to trails.
For the 50 Mile distance, I'd be interested to hear what else you recommend. Longer/tougher long runs along the AT? More miles between Long Runs; some double run days?
Since the beginning of the year, I've been peaking my weeks at between 55-70 miles per week
Before the NF 50 on Oct 15, I still have the '11 H2T in August, FATS 50K 2 weeks prior to the NF and MMM 1/2 the week before the NF, so I plan to leverage these as training opportunities.

Hey Scott,
While there are many more well qualified folks on here than me that could give you some great advice I would simply go with the approach to do longer/tougher runs on any technical trail that has some good calf-grinding/quad-burning elevation change - the AT would be great for that. Longer, i.e. 4-5 hours at minimum, pushing the longer ones to 8+; and make sure the trail is technical, i.e lots and lots and lots of rocks, with a good quantity of roots thrown in for good measure. Pine Mtn is very rocky and it will beat you up physically and mentally if you aren't used to that. It sounds like you have the drive to do it..best of luck!!!
