Saturday morning I planned to check out Forest Service Road 42 off of GA-60, just west of Woody Gap. I would park at Woody Gap and ride my MTB down to 42, but first I thought I should drive down and find it. I didn’t see it and kept on driving because I also needed to check out where the BMT crosses 60 to see if there is any parking.
I found 3 vehicles parked in the grass on the north side trail entrance and another car up on the south side of the trail (looked like room for a few more). Not too far from the trail entrance (east) is a general store. It wasn’t open at 8 am and I should have checked to see if they had store hours posted but didn’t. I would hope it should be open by 9 or 10? I’ll check it out again this week (wed or sat).
I’m going to run two hours south on the BMT then return to GA-60 and do two hours north (BMT/DRT) as part of my Loop prep.
For the Big Loop run, I hope three liters of water will be good for the run from Woody Gap north to GA-60, refill at the store (I could stash some water but that adds 30 miles to the trip), and continue on the south loop back to Woody Gap.
Oh, on the drive back I did find FSR-42, it’s at the end of Cooper Gap Road. I took it all the way to the Springer Mt. Parking lot, then down the mountain to Double Gap Road (6.5 miles from the parking lot to Double Gap). But before I left, I rode my bike down the mountain to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church then back up to Springer (13 miles total). There were a few times I had to walk the bike (like when my heart rate was pushing 175 and when I could walk faster than I could ride). I quit after I got back up to the parking lot. The weather wasn’t so great up there. I can deal with the rain, it was the lightning I wasn’t too happy about.
