Back when I registered the campground had already filled up. Anyone have a campsite that they would be willing to share? I have a pretty small tent and can bring beer and veggie food. If not, does anyone have an open cabin room or can recommend a good nearby motel/hotel?
I saw that Becky had sent an email regarding an avail. cabin. I emailed her back today, but expect it's been taken by now.

Hi Paul. I'm driving up that morning, but I briefly considered staying the night in Rome. I found some 'not bad' hotel deals - $55 on travelocity for a Best Western type hotel. I was going to use priceline for an even better deal.

I drove up to Twisted Ankle from Smyrna on the morning of the race last year and it only took me 80 minutes or so. I'll be doing the same this year. There are a handful of hotels in Summerville, just north of the park.

Thanks! I think I'll just drive over as well. I'm under 2 hrs anyway. See you there. I should be toward the very back of the marathon folks if you're doing the full. If you're doing the half you'll be long gone by the time I finish

I'm running the half, but am sticking around for the full marathoners to finish.

I changed my mind and am staying at the Coach Inn in Summerville. The race doesn't start until 9 so I will be able to sleep in, woo hoo!

I'm still driving up there the morning of the race. If anybody wants a truck ride, let me know. I promise that I won't slide on black ice this time.

Jason - I'd love to carpool but am driving over from Cumming, a bit of a different direction from you.
If anyone over this way would like to share a ride, let me know.

Paul - somebody just posted on the runango forum that there is last-minute cabin space available. Since that was the original purpose of your post, thought I would pass that along!

What a tough course! I went out way too quick in the marathon, after being sick most of the week. I am ashamed too say there was quite a bit of walking involved in the last half of the race. It was pretty warm too. I saw quite a few GUTS runners out there.

Here's my Twisted Ankle Trail Marathon race report: www.facebook.com/#!/notes/jason-rogers/twisted-ankle-trail-marathon-51510-race-report/392238938681 Cliff's Notes version: I finished, but I got my tail handed to me by the humidity and from being out of shape. Finished one hour and forty-five minutes slower than I did last year. I had a lot of fun, in an offbeat way, though. There are a few glitches that should be fixed for next year's TA race... - Aid stations need to write down the race numbers of runners passing through to keep track of everyone. (Especially in this race, where only 95 of 175 full marathon registrants finished and where people had to seek medical attention from the heat/humidity.) - In a race that advertises no firm cutoff time, the finish line clock doesn't need to be taken down before every runner has finished and the final finishers need to be documented in the race results. - Better course markings near Marble Falls. (I didn't mention these in my race report, because anybody who reads my race report has an idea of what they're getting themselves into next year and I did see some great effort from volunteers and forest rangers. Still, I'll probably send some friendly suggestions to the RD in the months before next year's race.) Congrats to everyone who ran out there on the trails. This was a tough one!

jason, i agree with you that the race could use a few improvements. 1. better course markings (maybe i'm only saying this because i missed a turn) 2. definitely need to be marking runners at the aid stations - at least the two turnaround aid stations. there were at least 2 finishers in front of me that i know didn't make it to turnaround #2. I thought I finished 6th, but the results show me 9th. makes you wonder....
i already emailed the rd and she responded pretty quickly. drop her a line.
overall i think the course was fair but definitely a challenge. an earlier start time might not be a bad idea. best- brent

It didn't occur to me that runners could be ranked that skipped the second turnaround because of aid stations not marking down numbers. I'll consider you to be the 6th finisher.

I know it is a minor thing, but bananas at the finish would have been very helpful. I saw a lot of people cramping up. I also went the wrong way once or twice but there were several occassions where I wasn't sure exactly which way to go...but guessed correctly. Brente, if you ran the marathon and the runners ahead of you took the first turnaround, that would be a huge difference.....and they did not get to experience the lovely hill from 18-19M. Did any have problems with the gatorade? something made me throw-up after the HM turnaround aid station.

I didn't have any problems with the gatorade, but I could have used some food at the end of the race too. I started cramping a little at about 3 hours in and I was eating S! caps. Weather was brutal. I think a few people have already mentioned it, but an earlier race start would probably help. I could care less if people don't run the entire course. I just wish they had informed the folks at the finish line so they would not mess up the rankings. My wife thinks I lied to her!

It's great to see all the GUTS runners at Twisted Ankle, and I got to meet/chat with some of y'all at the finish line. I hope that I get to make it to some of the GUTS races this year, and the invitation to come run with me in Savannah is open! Some responses (as friend of RD and 5 time TA finisher): - RD does the late start to give people from ATL and further time to drive up in the morning since hotels are limited in the area. The late start also gives volunteers more time to arrive, set up, etc. Nobody complains on the years it isn't hot - There was food at the finish - I bought the bananas myself. They just got eaten up quickly b/c of the weather (there weren't any left when I finished at 5:23 either, but fortunately I didn't need one). - As far as signage goes, the one spot every year that is troublesome is coming down off the ridge where you can turn right to go to the Marble Mine (correct) and left to go back up Becky's Bluff (oh so wrong). There is a sign there, there has been a sign there all 6 years. On the way up, the sign points to the right fork in the trail to go to BB. The sweeper then turns the sign around so it is now pointing right towards the Marble Mine for those on their way back down. It was there when I went thru around 5 hours. I think the trail is marked marvelously, but I am pretty familiar with it. Besides, I think part of the joy of trail running is the potential to get lost in the woods, right? - There is usually a ranger at both Full turnarounds taking numbers for both purposes described. I didn't notice one at the first turnaround, but I didn't stick around long. I think the ranger at the second turnaround was too distracted by the volunteer in the bikini Please email the RD with your comments sooner rather than later while they are fresh in your mind. I know she wants to do everything she can to make TA the best race in the SE!

Hey y'all... I love seeing you each year! I finally figured it was time to join up here and say hey... I hear your concerns, and appreciate all of them, and the good comments as well. And thanks, romegirl, for explaining some of the complaints. You know! Let me add just a bit... I direct a trail race and not a road race for a LOT of reasons, but one is that whatever goes, goes, is what I've learned over the years. Passed a blue flag? Oops, turn around! I've done it a lot. Once I ran a couple miles out of the way...Nothing but water left? MAN that water tastes good! I am sorry about all those pesky , hot runners eating everything up. Every year I buy/bake more, and every year y'all EAT more! It's like being a mom. I just really want y'all to know that I hear you. Some things may change a bit, others will stay just as they are. I do wish the weather had cooperated... I'm already hard on work on that for next year. Otherwise, I am pooped! Thanks, y'all!
