If you don't have a Garmin (on the wish list). A cool free GPS app for a Android, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, or iPhone to track your runs. www.sportypal.com/You can upload your run directly to the web site, Facebook and Twitter. Unlike some of the other apps for cell phones that do similar stuff, I haven’t had any problems with this one. Even when the phone died I recovered the run up till that point.

My garmin quit on me along my last AT run, too many trees. Do the cell phone apps have the same difficulty?

Well since this orig question was asked back in March 2010... I think cell phone tracking, cell phone aps, and cell phones have improved. I use the iPhone 4 (with latest iOS) and Runkeeper (http://runkeeper.com) to track my runs. It does an amazing job, is extremely accurate, and even in moderate cover (Pine Mountain / Sutallee / Kennesaw Mtn) remains incredibly able to give satisfactory data. Keeping the thing dry is a bit of a challenge, but with various tape and Ziploc freezer bags, I've been able to do a pretty good job while still being able to use the phone touch screen during a run. I also have found that sticking a folded paper towel or silica packet (you know, the little packets that come in the box with shoes to keep them dry) inside really gives a great way of keeping dry. Honestly, I would rather Apple just charge another 75 bucks and make the darn thing waterproof. They could you know.
