the first powerline is not on the map. go to the Big Rock trailhead, which is on the map (there is literally a BIG rock there right next to the road). walk 40 paces from the road and look up. you will see the powerline trail. run to the top and take a right. it will run into the 301 bike trail. this trail is on the map. follow the 301 around the mtn to experience the 2nd loop for the marathoners. 2 weeks ago it took us 2:50 to complete. it is 13 miles when starting and ending at the big rock.

;D Thanks Prez, I know where the rock is. ;D

The Maps show you need a permit for the 301 section, is that true or just for bikes? ::)

I'll stop by and let the rangers know I'm out there. 8-)

Here is the Maps that the park puts out:

http://www.gastateparks.org/net/go/parks.aspx?show=map&LocationID=42&s=0.0.0.5

You can make out most of the run from these and Janice's description on the MMM site. :P

I HOPE to have race course maps out next week. they will essentially be the same maps Larry posted with the course drawn on top.

YES - you need to stop by the rangers station and let them know if you plan to take the 301. You don't have to pay the $2 extra permit fee, but they want to know if you will be out there. So, when you enter the park, take the very first right turn after the entrance guard gate and that will take you to the ranger office.

;D If you wish to run the course in sections, I'll be able to start next week. ;D

Will not be fast at first, but will pick up as I memorize the course and footfalls. :P

E-Mail me if you can go up during the week. 8-)

Cheers!

I ran the Gahuti yesterday morning leaving from cabin 6 to the trail entrance near there. This is definitely (by my measure, at least) a relatively tough trail with the West-side of the trail being more difficult than the East-side. It seemed like I walked at least a 1/3 of it, finishing in just under 3 hrs with an average HR of 140. I did keep the effort light not knowing where I was going and not seeing another person the whole time. This included a bit of map-reading time and a stop at the bathroom near the Old Fort picnic area. My foot pod's battery died just past halfway so am not sure of the total distance and don't have a nice elevation profile for it :(.

We did see a mom bear and 2 cubs crossing the road just before cabin 15 last night as we were coming back from dinner. Two folks I met also mentioned a bear siting this morning (Fri) on the Gahuti as well.

Note: The water in the bathrooms and the cabins tastes strongly of bleach. Just horrible.

If I don't get injured before the race, I'll definitely be there for the 12 mi. I'm just holding off signing up as I've wasted a few slots with my injuries this year. If it fills beforehand, I'm a volunteer.

Though hard, this is a beautiful trail.

;D Fay was a good storm for Georgia ;D

Fortunately I wasn't able to SURF out there on the waves. I was able to do some Red Top loops to be able to do some races that only Christians would hope to prepare for.

The HL 24 lake is coming up in a few weeks. Hopefully the NC boys and girls will not bash me there too much. We will have a lot of ROOKIES there to give an opinion. Some of the runners have done a lot of cross training and lost a lot of weight, so I.m expecting them to do great and give us old guys a challenge.

The 24 Hour is no prep for MMM. I must learn cross traing i guess to get me prepared for the hills at FT. Mountain.

I expect to Surf the course with my friends.

Where would be a good place nearer to Atlanta to prepare for MMM? It's hard with my busy schedule to get up to Fort Mountain for a run.

Maybe the trails at Sweetwater? If so, which ones in which direction? Maybe something at Red Top?

Cheers,
Lucinda

Sweetwater would be pretty good. Be sure and do repeats on the power lines sections.

so what exactly is doubletrack? I've run singletrack, yet have never heard of doubletrack. I hope it's just more lanes to run on. ;)

Heh. I'm glad to hear that doubletrack is just wider. I have done *some* trail running (mostly singletrack along with rocks and roots), but thought maybe it was a special type of trail running that was more technical. I registered yesterday and I'm looking forward to joining you all in GA.

Thanks. How exactly do I access the power lines sections? I'm not as familiar with ALL the trails in Sweetwater, though I've been there quite a few times. I haven't run the Sweetwater H2O, so I'm still learning all the trails.

Cheers.

If you start to feel good during an ultra, don't worry you will get over it.

Janice I will be totally running on my talent at the MMM, I have been so sick and not training. Then I have the 100M.

Please scratch me if I look bad. Todays mileage was on memory.
I did not want to be there on the hills, but better than bed.

I don't want to keep y'all out there all day so I may call it at 12M, if that is OK. I am sorry, I want to be a better runner for GUTS and you.

This is so amazing, I pushed for an ultra club like GUTS for so long in my heart as did Richard Schick. And now it exists thanks to Janice and the young runners.

You just don't know how much I love you Janice and your Team for making GUTS happen and making a Ultra club live in Georgia.

So If I give you a hug now and then, its cause you deserve it. And don't worry about us old runners we are OK.

Just pull us if we look out of it, but Im OK at MMM.

The 100M at Pinhoti will test all i have left, but it will be fun. ty you for caring about us and having aid stations.

I will need to prepare and run this run for GUTS. But mostly Janice I will be just that little boy on the FARM, chasing Rabbits, looking for four leaf clovers, dancing across the creek and knowing MOM is awaiting at home with supper.

I will not disappoint you Janice if my talent allows.

Thank you for the aid stations. I'll try my best to be there.

Larry

;D Larry, I do not know any old runners out there. Low mileage never hurt. Just enjoy the 12 and we will do a run at a better time.

well larry i hope you feel better soon. let me know if you want to officially switch to the 12M, no biggie. you should save yourself for pinhoti anyway.

we do have cutoffs since we can't have folks out there after dark. so if you don't get back to aid station 4 by 3:45 Jaydene and her merciless crew will put you out of your misery
